GF/BF Fans
While I did go off in a rant about these types of fans in another post, I felt I didn't go into enough emotion and their behaviors about them.
First and foremost, a majority of fans aren't like this. Some like their music, their other pursuits, yet still enjoy them all the same. They won't exactly follow all the rumors and so forth. Some dedicated fans might have suspicions about their idol's sexuality or single status because there will be hints that most fans might point out the similar or identical matching items.
Yet this minority of fans are loud. And the minority of fans are typically the loudest unless there is a consensus among fans as seen with the fans' disillusionment with their once-favorite creators or franchise that I won't name. Then there are fans who are extremely violent and invading privacy.
In the West, loony fans are so well-known that stalker laws are made because of them and their actions that actually took the stars' lives. Death threats from these fans are horrible and when they do take the chance, they go for the kill. It's better to be safe than sorry, regarding stalkers.
From the Kpop industry, there doesn't seem to be any major deaths by sasaeng as of yet and I mean murders, not suicides. Yes, I just say yet because, at one point, something is going to happen to an innocent idol. There was a poisoning incident with one idol and I know there was much more security drawn from staff and idols from then forward, just because of how publicized it is.
But I'm not here to discuss sasaeng since everyone knows what sasaeng is, but rather an adjacent of a sasaeng who is another kind of extreme.
I define sasaeng as the crazy stalker fans who don't care about privacy or personal space. Almost anti but their fannish behavior is the extreme on the other way, believing the idol supposed to give them the time of day to the point of crime. Antis, on the other hand, will make up rumors and do extreme things like making an organized smear campaign just to destroy the idol they hate. That's what happened to Xiao Zhan and Exo's Chen when it's clear they are the scapegoat and attacked irrationally.
I define as gf/bf fans as 'fans' who believe themselves to be the said gf/bf of their idol and hates any implications whether or not their idol is dating and their happiness with their SO.
The similarities are that they have the mentality of all about me, lack of logic, and have the mental gymnastics to get to the mindset where they are now.
And these fans are a major target and demographic of idols. This is the major reason why they firmly believe they are dating their fans from afar and think their idol thought of them from afar.
I think of this as a consequence of how much fans are so well connected to the idol itself and building around the fan. This isn't anything troubling since in the west lately, hating on fans have become such a fashion that fans became disillusioned by how the creators disrespected them and their favorite piece of media. There isn't anything wrong with giving fans what they want but there should be a limit, like say advertising an idol as the fan's gf/bf to the point of delusion. It's one thing to invest time and money into your fave artist but it's another to think this person would truly date you for real just because you invest that time and money.
Idols have a different set of rules than actors and other celebs. Because their gf fans are a major demographic. Even if it’s the minority. They have the image of a 'boyfriend' and 'girlfriend' image to their major target. Therefore, if they want to have their personal lives, they must hide it and only shout to the roofs about their relationship in subtle ways that only the dedicated fans would keep up.
Only the dedicated fans would keep up to date for the most part, especially when they would notice something weird that indicates a lover. Not every fan would seek out if an actor is dating another actor. These people won't even keep up to date whether or not there are indications their idol is dating and would be confused about why the heck this popular fansite is even bringing up this when they don't keep track. I heard this happen in Wang Yibo's Chinese fandom where most people in the comments were confused about why a popular MTJJ blog brings up the ox necklace at all. This is also the worrying thing about two guys dating that was not taken seriously the same way a het couple would have. I have seen more het couples in the tropes page for Romance on the Set than queer couples. A major standout would be the Les Mis gay couple. Seriously, I bet if Xiao Zhan or Wang Yibo have either been a girl, rumors by now would be they are married and having a child. Instead of y'know rumors of them dating and the fake rumor mill from both BXG and solos alike.
There is no winning with these fans. They will demand drastic things just to keep their idols status as single and dating them. Even when it's obvious it's clear that he doesn't know them personally. Some fans might go as far as stalking them just to feel that they’re his SO.
These fans are not sane. It is one thing to bake a birthday cake for an idol and dedicating to them because I saw people making cakes for fictional characters' birthdays. That's normal in comparison because the fans would just eat the cake together with other fans or share it with their friends. People bake cakes for fun and this is no different. It's another to have the mental gymnastics to go from 'this is my ideal SO' to 'if this idol poured money into their SO's life, they will be angry for just how much money and time they poured into them just gone to waste because their idol isn't dating them'.
This extremity extends to the singleness of an idol that these gf fans refused to consider their idol's right to love. They don't care Kpop idols passed their numbers to individuals they are interested in. All they care about is 'me, me, me'.
The infamous Nayeon stalker, Josh, is not right in the head since he seemed to be completely convinced he loves her to true love levels that he will kill her if she ever dates anyone privately because she has to tell him beforehand. Just...holy Mew, nobody sane would want to kill an innocent idol who simply wanted to live out her dream. The best anyone can do is to keep banning him and even arrest him if he ever lands in Korea. They should forbid him from entering anywhere near Nayeon, be it on tour in Europe or Korea.
On the other end of the spectrum on the insane degree, there are the ExoL gf fans who verbally hate Chen just for starting a new chapter in his life with his wife and newborn daughter. No matter what Chen does from actually telling them congrats on how long they have been fans for or 'apologizing' to them just for having a family they don't have any hand in telling off, they will rage irrationally. Even when the other Exo members shaded them indirectly, they will still rage.
On another end would be Oli London. I actually don't consider him a BTS or a Kpop fan or a Jimin stan. When he displayed ignorance about Korea and Asia in general, I say he is using the Korean Wave for his promotion of plastic surgery when he has connections through his friends and businesses. While I don't want him to meet Jimin just as I don't want Josh to meet Nayeon, Oli's problem is the plastic surgeries he kept on promoting rather than Jimin love I think he's not as passionate about but using as a prop. Regardless, he's still pretty bad and I would consider him only a bf fan only if he's using Jimin only as this bf material thing he wants and...he isn't quite doing that. Plastic surgeries are something he vastly promotes than anything BTS or Jimin alone. Besides, his ignorance of Korea made him a knockoff Jeffree Star and Jeffree Star is already terrible.
For those fans, I say he doesn't know you all personally, probably already told the rest of his groupmates about his plans as evident by SM releasing statements. Most people won't even care that a celeb has a new lover or scandal but when they see these 'fans' vocally shout their disapproval just because their idol isn't dating them, normal people would call them out and say they are crazy.
These idols don't have to apologize to their gf fans just for starting a new chapter in life or for having an SO in their life. Why do they have to stay single for the rest of their lives just for these youngin's sake? They are consenting adults who have the right to love another person. The people in their personal lives probably already know all the details as seen with Wang Yibo's DDU/TTXS bros knowingly not matchmaking him anymore with any young women that came to the show and saving him from saying too much with wild excuses. Even his fans don't think he's single anymore except his gf fans and the solo stans who refused to believe he's dating a certain someone they refused to name.
These gf fans might not even follow fans who noticed the stuff idols do, especially those in their friend group, make comment about it albeit offhandedly or tried to save them when they say too much. That's more telling than wearing matching clothes or changing styles. Seriously, fans can dissect a heterosexual idol relationship from matching clothes or items or change in styles from what one person used to wear or buying a car when the idol itself doesn't need to. And usually, they're right.
Except for queer couples or idols where they either react with homophobia or actually see the person's place in their idol's life and would believe this is the person their idol chose, therefore, they will support him. Seriously, I seen fans put together evidence that is similar to idol het couples yet were ignored because they are two same-sex people. Even now, the possibility of two guys who has the same couple habits as other heterosexual couples gets a pass because they are two men. Even when evidence kept building up.
Seriously, I saw Wang Yibo's fans absolutely refused to discuss Nan Hai, the ox necklace, the ice cream/sneakers vid while Xiao Zhan's fans refused to discuss his change in clothing styles when he used to favor soft fashion, not dad-like, like soft vintage best described as indie protag to street style Yibo favors as of late than the Kpop over-the-top style.
But I'm not going to discuss that. I mean, I feel like a clown, discussing those two. But the point is still the same. If fans have an inkling their idol might be queer and/or dating somebody, they will react.
Let's discuss an actual queer Kpop idol who has yet to come out but pretty obvious he's queer. Sehun from Exo!
There are many hints he's queer. He flat-out said talking to a guy gives him thrilling feelings and wondered why would a guy make him feel that way. This is actually quite common among queers since I have the same question about myself liking girls back in middle and high school because I already know I'm attracted to boys. Then the way he says 'I like men' when he could've said I like fanboys, fanboys are cool, etc. Seriously, there are many other different ways to phrase it. Then there's the pride Instagram filter that he used that his gf fans tried to excuse away that he doesn't know what it means when he is a fucking adult and everyone knows it's the pride filter. Everyone in the world knows what are the pride colors are. Why not these gf fans say that he supports the LGBT community by doing that instead of not knowing what he is doing unless they have an inkling themselves? His groupmates have hinted they knew about his sexuality a couple times and I think that's the finishing blow. They know it, given Chen and Xiumin explicitly stated they wouldn't date him, not because they dislike him, but because they are 'girls'. Because it's still subtle enough (it's a question if these idols are girls, which groupmate will they rank in terms of not dating), it flew over the head. In fact, Sehun listened to the radio broadcast and jokingly stated that Chen and Xiumin aren't his types. Baekhyun stated Sehun was not interested in women and nobody stopped him including Sehun.
There are rumors he's dating an older chef, going to the Philipines together on a special Korean holiday, and dates. Of course, people don't believe it with homophobia and large age difference, saying this chef guy is probably an older friend. To which I say, get out of that mindset. I'm going to counter that with a famous queer couple, Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black, who also has a major age difference. Is an Asian couple with two consenting adults that just happened to have a large age difference the same thing?
None of this has ever been scrutinized at length except those who point out the evidence. The homophobia and the refusal to believe a popular idol is gay, firmly because of their beliefs in being this idol's girlfriend has honestly saved Sehun and his lover a ton since most people seemed to shrug off an intimate relationship with an older man as just friends. Heavens above, an age difference between two consenting adults is so horrific just because of an age difference, never mind they found love, it's bad because they're men and have an age difference. Especially the age gap. I understand Asia's respecting elders since I was raised in a Vietnamese family. I understand power deferential, especially in positions of power that could lead to abuse, but we have to understand we can't generalize all age differences to that dynamic alone. Not when people have different life experiences as that is a better way to see it.
Much like Wang Yibo, Sehun seemed to reach stability in him that doesn't seem to be based on an increase in popularity or just doing things he's interested in. Sehun has been uncertain like you can actually see it at many points, that even a fortune-teller could tell. He seems genuinely happy now.
In Taiwan, it's more of an open secret about their sexualities. In China, Japan, and Korea, it's an open secret if they aren't out; I mean they might drop hints as explicit as they could be allowed to as long as the general public doesn't think much about it. Again, one of Yibo's TTXS/DDU bros saved him by saying the street clothes he sent home to share was his parents, who lived in his hometown, not in his main Beijing residence where also Xiao Zhan resides, and that Yibo was in another part of the country when he bought the stuff and the general public would not notice Xiao Zhan's change in style and his new clothes.
Again, I am wearing clown makeup, nose, and hair and willing to go out and dance the Joker dance for I am a clown about these two. But I'm trying to give an example of a potential queer couple whose occupations are idols. Yes, XZ is still an idol since he used to be a part of X9, a Chinese idol group made from a survival show, even when he’s branching out to a solo career.
And they have to hide it just as much any normal het idol couple. Because regardless, even if it's just a small part of the fandom, their reactions tend to be outraged selfish.
They move in a different circle than say Xiao Bao, an openly gay Waacker dancer and Bouboo, a French hip-hop dancer. Yes, I'm really loving Street Dance of China 3, even though I myself is a terrible dancer even though I took two dance classes at my college. These guys are dancers first and foremost, not idols that Wang Yibo and Xiao Zhan's target demographic are. This is in the same way Lisa and Hyolyn are, whose demographic are bf/gf fans. While their fans won't deny how multitalented they are, they are verbal about they themselves are the final love for their idol.
In the West, they used the bf/gf image to a less degree, they still used the boy/girl next door image in the likes of Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. Yes, I know they used to be Disney stars but the template is still there, even if it's played to a lesser degree. This is what done to western boy bands in One Direction for example.
But there is no stopping obsession.
If there is an idol group's set of fans I love, it's BigBang. Yes, I have nostalgia for them and will bow to the Kings of Kpop. I'm not interested in Kpop but I am willing to listen to whatever flaws that industry has and what changes it could have done. I can listen to Kpop but it's not my thing. But I'm not gonna talk about them, it's their fans.
And none of their fans, last I remember, were gf fans. Probably because they didn't advertise as the ideal bf material and set their image apart from the beginning. Last I recall reading somewhere, they were supposedly the ugliest Kpop idols by their debut. They expressed concern for Taeyang's single status and was absolutely delighted when they learned Taeyang met the love of his life and going to marry her. I know VIPs celebrated Taeyang's marriage as they wished him all the congrats and happiness for the next chapter in his life with his new wife.
Yes, there are still sasaeng but gf fans, the obsessive fans who won't take 'no' for an answer and screamed furiously if they as much as learn their idol's single status was gone, was not here for any of that. The only reason I could chalk it up to was that the fanbase grew up with them, watching them become the respected idols of all of Kpop worldwide due to their sheer influence and the idol of Kpop idols. Seriously, you can find a compilation of Kpop idols at BigBang concerts or performances or singing and dancing out BigBang songs.
I just wish the gf fans act more like BigBang's fanbase when they got the news of their idol's SO in life and would want to wish them all the happiness in the world.
I know that some fans actually can see this, not the gf fans, and wished their idols all the happiness in the world with their SO.
These gf/bf fans must let of the possessiveness and delusion that their idol loves them as their love of their lives.
If they want their idol's happiness, they must support their decisions regarding their love of their lives. They must realize they have their own lives and live in a separate sphere than they do. They must realize that due to following their star for so long, stuff that indicates their sexuality that fans will desperately try to pass off as ignorance.
If they watched closely to other fans detecting clues to their idol secretly dating somebody and learn to choke it down that their idol will never be theirs in the way they thought, then they can deal with it.
If they deal with it violently to the point they send death threats and react foolishly to even the wicked threats to the point normal fans disowned them, then they will have to be stopped at all costs.
Nobody wants their idol gone just for the basic human right for love. Killing them just because they won't have them doesn't make the situation any better, it's dangerous behavior, delusional.
Why can't idols get married and have a family? I understand queer couples because there is lots of homophobia attached but it will take a while for celebs to come out young without losing future opportunities. In this lifetime at least.
When normal het idols have to secretly date when other celebs like actors and talk show hosts are allowed to date openly.
The gf/bf image for these idols is so stupid yet they also generate money. It works but also detrimental to the idol's personal lives, forcing to hide a simple relationship just so their 'fans' are satisfied 'dating' them. Forced to 'apologize' when that would never be enough and no one should apologize for dating and marrying the one they love.
Even all these deluded fans believe they are doing for their idol's benefit, they are doing this for selfish reasons because their bf/gf image was shattered all because their idol might be dating someone. Normal fans put together details of their idols dating somebody when coincidences lined up. You can easily convince someone of a heterosexual idol couple with three similarities or matching items alone.
Why can't they see that other celebs are allowed to have this but not their idol purely because they were advertised and the companies fostered the gf/bf image of the idol that all idols know when they enter the industry?
Chen knew what he was doing when he released the info he's going to marry and have a baby with the woman of his dreams. His Exo bros and SM already know yet he was forced to placate them by 'apologizing' and he didn't do it sincerely. Yet fans are still supporting him. In fact, those who are still supporting him want him to wear his wedding ring and show it off proudly.
It would be best that it would be normalized that idols would be able to date openly with the one they love most in the world, like just saying you're not single anymore publically instead of relying on others to drop hints they aren't single anymore.
It will take a while for queer idols to come out without losing future opportunities. But they could've still dropped hints because the hints they are dropping now is so subtle that fans tried to explain away without considering the idol's choice in the matter.
But when idols can have that basic right to date and marry the one they love, they should, elopement or wedding ceremony.
The gf/bf 'fans' who incidentally refused to see what their idol wants just because of their selfish wants can just get out of the mindset and the fandom when they're at it because they're embarrassing the general fandom who does want their star to find happiness, even if it's someone of the same sex.
I hope that sometime in the future, idols just don't have the gf/bf image that perpetuates erotomania.
It's fine to have celeb crushes. I have one on Xiao Zhan and that's because he seems to present himself as bf material and just a funny gremlin once you look past his mask of prince charming. While I do think he's genuinely bf material and he's definitely a nice guy to everyone he meets, he's also taken and I know this because some hints dropped he's off the market probably since CQL filming. I don't know him personally so I'm just going off what I do know.
But his delusional fans won't believe that because he's supposed to be dating them, not the one he loves most in the world.
If these 'fans' can't take the fact their idols might be gay, then they should consider the industry that large must have queers involved no matter what. When Holland is an example, then they should consider the possibility their idol might be queer, like really queer, not fanservice that bros and friends play up because they know it's just pretending.
Seriously, if they want fanservice of BL actors, then seek out the Thai BL fanbase where stories of actors fanservice are more numerous. Heck, even the BTS in the new BL drama Immortality, the Erha live-action adaptation, is making use of scripted fanservice that is incredibly reminiscent of BJYX CQL BTS flirting. I'm going to say something way below about this.
But the difference between fanservice and actual queer behavior.
Xiao Zhan flirted with a cameraman onscreen in an interview that they didn't cut out. He flirted with Wang Yibo onscreen in the BTS and afterward. It's pretty obvious he's an outrageous flirt to men.
Wang Yibo clearly enjoys the gag of guys fake kissing at the right angle he did it many times. When it comes to a guy he finds interesting, he will seek that guy out. One time at a skincare event, he outright stated that men get more handsome the older they get.
Sehun used the pride filter in his Instagram Livestream. The most obvious sign was him asking why a guy giving him thrills makes him feel that way and anybody whose queer would know this feeling.
Ryujin's infamous story of how she even became a star in the first place. She met a lady, a cute one in her opinion, and gave her the number without a second thought because the lady was cute. She had in no way in knowing the lady was an actual recruiter. Just because she got scouted at a GOT7 gig doesn't negate anything; I know lesbians who enjoy boybands. You can enjoy a same-sex group without being sexually or romantically interested in them. Just because mainly straight youths are the target for Kpop groups doesn't mean all of them are sexually or romantically interested.
Then there is fanservice acted out by Kpop stars who are obviously pretending. Some stars might have genuine queerness but fanservice in Kpop is fanservice up to including kissing each other and skinship.
I'm sure that in the industry that while doesn't recognize LGBT but tolerates them in this lifetime, there are out and open secrets about a person and this person. Rumors also abound too.
Listen, Asia may have a complicated relationship with queers in the modern era, but the queer community is there and still thriving.
It's tolerant for now but acceptance will take away longer. When the queer community has to take the scraps of tolerance but still working for acceptance.
The queer community all over the world is thriving despite the major setbacks and especially homophobia.
The gf fans are particularly homophobic when evidence to the contrary of the idol's 'straight' image. Because no way is that possible. No way. These guys are straight and that's it. Them being gay ruins their image of the perfect boyfriend and there is no way they are letting that go.
Seriously, they firmly believe they are straight because they believe they are straight, assuming sexuality here, folks. Fantasies, to them, are fine about these guys but as soon as it's real, the homophobia will come out and they will utterly refuse to mention it.
Fanservice is okay because even those gf fans would either have two reactions that they're bros and the other would be shipping them due to the least possibility of them being really queer. Yeah, that is possible since I have seen some just ship BXG do this and other RPS fandoms. Fanservice can happen between bros as evident by the Thai BL fanbase, which is veterans when exposed to fanservice on part of BL actors out of costume for years on end.
But no, these dedicated gf fans and solo stans want to make damn sure we don't see Xiao Zhan or Wang Yibo as either guy's friend because I think even they see the hints for what they truly are but rejected it profusely. Because no way. No way. They won't even see just how either guy changed their idol's life and how much their idol truly sees them as a precious part of their life.
All I can hope in the future were those idol companies letting go of the gf/bf image for their idols and let their idols date freely since their other celeb adjacents are allowed to and continued to do their job. When they see the wrong attitudes of these fans towards the basic right of love and marriage that all the other celeb has and especially Taeyang, then they should let it go and allow dating that nobody will bat an eye at, and seriously, nobody bats an eye at any celeb who wants to date someone except homophobic people at queers.
It will take a while to see queer idols openly without them losing future opportunities. Unless they truly made it their image like Holland, I don't think in this lifetime, they would be able beyond being an open secret in the industry itself. I sensed this is the case with most idols that are queer and queer couples in said industry. Because there will be rumors and those people in the know and suspicions.
Then there's the fanservice. It's pretty obvious that the team behind this drama doesn't understand what made CQL famous. CQL team have hit jackpot with two men who provided raw acting and have the chemistry that cannot be faked. With the added benefit of them falling in love by the side. I really do mean that, even with the CPN and deluded clown disclaimer.
I worry the scripted BTS, which ruins the point of a BTS by the way, will make their way to other BL dramas. People have already pointed out the falsity about it, not the Immortality drama is already going through enough controversies.
It's best to see it as another drama than a BTS. I mean people like watching actors in period costumes do modern things so it's best to think of it that way.
I am interested in watching whatever the hell the drama is going to do. It's understandable they are going to have to censor things by law. It does have a student and teacher romance relationship in there. Scumbag System donghua is having that as well as they are using subtlety to make way with the censorship. Yes, I am wondering how the hell are they going to go about this with the censorship, especially after CQL shows how it could be done? Even though CQL has the benefit of finding actors who not only made their characters but also actually falling in love during the course of filming?
Besides, I am also interested in reading 2ha. It's a BL so please make sure to understand that the writers of BL would have the tropes of the said genre so to blame the writers when the genre has all the bad tropes that people associates with it. Besides, I'm more anticipating the donghua than the drama.
CQL team hit jackpot when they cast Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo. Their chemistry has been noted to be off the charts by fans, probably helped by that the two fell in love during the course of the filming. Yes, I am not going to let that go. I'm here with my clown garb for these two and their relationship.
The script is really weird. Why the hell would LWJ hurt WWX? Giving LWJ JC's lines was stupid and shallow. CQL and MDZS fans would rip that script to shreds. Had the actors seen CQL? Were they working with the scriptwriter or they could've just used the original scene script? Because they obviously changed it up.
Yes, the performances were not good. These two may have little acting experience but so did Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo. Neither guy went to acting school. XZ majored in graphic design while Web didn't even go to college. Wang Yibo is an expressive guy and that helps him create a wonderful LWJ based on his body language and microexpressions alone. Xiao Zhan experienced so much character bleed and somewhat method acting to get into the role of WWX that he needed vaca to get out of WWX's headspace. Xiao Zhan has only started acting while Wang Yibo only acted because an idol means you have some opportunities open for the taking that isn't singing or dancing. They could've just analyzed their characters a little more.
Like these two aspiring actors should've taken the script revised it and analyzed what the characters and what point in the story was it all about. Again, the scene they are acting is after the famous zhiji/soulmate sequence so it should've been easy to seek out the scene or watch the couple scenes before the rain scene.
Again, the CQL team hit jackpot, having two guys who happen to have incredible chemistry and happen to fall in love during the filming. I mean I'm not expecting the two aspiring actors to fall in love the same way YiZhan did, but I did expect some level of emotions. Yes, Web and XZ have the benefit of filming throughout the summer the other scenes but as aspiring actors, they should be aware that the scene they have filmed was romantically charged in all the right ways. Imagine they could've filmed other iconic Wangxian sequences from CQL. CQL is a BL drama and everyone in China knows that. CQL just happened to have two leads whose chemistry was off the roof that probably not helped by the shameless flirting and all that romance on the set situation.
Either this show was a reality show which means it's scripted or this script was shoved into these aspiring actors' hands that have all the mistakes and lack of research just to drive up controversy for more views but also left these actors in the dust as they have to deal with a negative response from fans and audience alike for their performances.
There are many ways to look at these actors but since I don't know the show, I just hope to Godoka that these actors aren't bashed and just don't take at face value the script given at a possibly scripted reality show even as aspiring actors.
However, I do have to note that Web and XZ got hate for 'being lucky' for getting their star-making roles. Of course, other actors may have different interpretations but the point was the acting and aspiring actors should y'know delve deeper if they truly want to give the rawest and greatest performance they can have. Did they have time to practice beforehand because as aspiring actors, they have to, especially when they got a set to act?
