Jukebox and Movie Musicals

I don't consider myself a Baz Lurhmann stan. I like his style, especially in the current greyscale slop and photorealistic animation trend. Thank god, we are heading for a most stylized animation as I have seen more of what animation medium could achieve and be over the 'look how many strands of hair Rapunzel and Merida have?!'. I have witnessed mocking posts on Tumblr about Disney and Pixar's reliance on photorealism.

His maximalist fingerprint is everywhere. As soon as I see it, it’s obvious it has to be Baz.

For example, I had seen the Red Curtain Trilogy before the Great Gatsby which I have seen since my high school senior year. My classmates and I discussed it at length as I remember one complained that modern music doesn’t fit with the roaring twenties era.

Honestly outside of the music, Baz told the story well instead of changing too much as in the end, it’s a simple story. I mean he certainly made the gay scene between Nick and McKee straight but at least he's open to it. With the book now public domain, hopefully, we'll actually see the scene fully realized one of these days. It’s stylized but this is Baz. Honestly, at this point, I think people are unable to get past stylization if certain directors stick to it.

It’s not even one of the best books, sure a book to teach how literary devices work in a narrative, but it’s not something I would call Fitzgerald’s masterpiece.

Baz works best with simple stories but has enough substance and depth to it. He’s best with tragic love stories of Star-crossed lovers. Baz can utilize tonal shifts from zany goofy hammy comedy to sincere love to dark cruelty. He can tell a scene with his quick editing just as the emotions are vibrant and intense. Other common elements are his anachronistic play with time (past and the present with modern music or clothes mixed with the time period's music and clothes), personal human desires vs artificial mask/public persona, a heightened world, and a framing narrative via a character telling the story hence the hyper stylism.

Seriously, that last one is the only way I can justify Elvis the way it was told. Elvis was almost there in terms of getting mediocre but not quite there. I can't say that it's all the way bad the way BoRap was but it definitely isn't my favorite Baz Luhrmann film. All I can do is cheer that Elvis walked away with nothing at the Oscars because Elvis is definitely one of his weakest films when the Great Gatsby is better.

Honestly, if the dialogue wasn’t poorly performed in an otherwise accurate adaptation of the lines closest to the original text, stage directions, and relayed emotions because the campiness is Shakespeare, R + J would’ve been one of the best as it’s the closest thing to accuracy. I didn’t mind the crazy sets and shots as I was able to accept the suspension of disbelief. Believe it or not, Baz actually kept Juliet's pivotal soliloquies whereas Zeffrelli's Juliet's soliloquies were not kept. That was a red flag because those soliloquies are pivotal to the character and the plot, showing that Juliet is the true protagonist.

I recommend the Red Curtain Trilogy because even now, those aged better with time just on sincerity and conviction. Really, if I were to have any movie collection, it's this one.

At least, two of the Red Curtain Trilogy have been influential. Romeo + Juliet for making teens the audience and their success with the demographic leading the modern Shakespearean adaptations from She's the Man to 10 Things I Hate About You and Moulin Rouge for the movie musical revival which is still felt today.

Seriously, seeing him release new movies still takes me by surprise. I don’t keep up with any movie news except animation. And even then I want to see the teasers and trailers because announcements can be just that. I have seen Disney not make any animated movies they announce and cut down on movies that were made by other studios before shutting them down. Disney, you fucking monopoly, I hope one day the returns on the current trend you’re chasing instead of the timeless themes will be worth it.

Anyways, I haven’t seen his other movies. Aside from The Great Gatsby, I haven’t heard as much fanfare as I did Elvis. Ugh, Elvis, aside from it being a biopic, Elvis is just controversial given how he took black music and didn’t credit them or bring them more recognition. Yeah, he got his own style but it’s still black music that white people appropriated. I’m just wary but I think I can make it through it because at least I like Baz Luhrmann's style.

Baz Luhrmann is a divisive director with equally divisive films. It's a love it or hate it when it comes to his famous works. His filmography is small compared to his peers but to his credit, he wants to make art even if it did seem like he's desperate for an Oscar with his biopic outing. If nothing else, I would like to give an award for kicking off trends and impactful works with MR and R+J. It got to the point he got two stage adaptations of two of the Red Curtain Trilogy, MR and SB.

Moulin Rouge is such a unique and important piece of film and musical. Regardless of its cliche melodrama, it’s a piece of art that references other art from film to theatre to make something only Baz Lurhmann can create. It’s a story full of archetypes but it’s just so unique despite that. There wouldn't be a dedicated fanbase to actually make the stage adaptation and keep it running for years now and all the AUs although the actual MR tag is a very small amount in comparison.

Blonde was just horrid and seriously, can we stop exploiting Marilyn Monroe after her death if she wasn’t able to have peace in life? Just let the woman rest in peace, not to further exploit her legacy in demeaning ways from Kardashian to the new biopic. Can we get an Eartha Kitt biopic that is on the level of Frida? Women of color need biopics more than another Marilyn Monroe biopic. If we were to have another Marilyn Monroe biopic, could we have one that actually uplifts her and all the phenomenal stuff that she had done? It would be far more interesting to see her build her production company as well as her friendship with Ella Fitzgerald than the misogynistic eyesore that is Blonde

Disney Cinderella is probably my first Disney musical, The Little Mermaid animated is my first Disney Broadway musical, and Moulin Rouge is my first movie musical and jukebox musical. Cinderella 1997 is probably my first introduction to a live-action stage musical first probably but it's made for a television movie, not a full-on movie musical.

Moulin Rouge brought back the movie musical back in a big way. Its success showed that audiences still want musicals and boy do we get them. Not only had people grown up from Disney musicals, but early movie musicals also played a part with Moulin Rouge showing a revamp of what the movie musical could be as well as what the jukebox musical could be at its best. Seriously, people mention Chicago all the time and how it's the best without mentioning that Chicago wouldn't have been well-received if it were not for MR although I still think its success would be independent of MR if MR wasn't released first; it came a year right after it. Chicago wouldn’t have won Best Picture if it were not for Moulin Rouge’s results. The movie musicals of the last two decades are trying hard to emulate the best of the best movie musicals. Whether they fail or not is up to personal interpretation.

I mean there was a hint that people still want musicals with Brandy and Whitney Houston's Cinderella 1997. It got the highest rating for a TV musical and got major nominations and awards. It was a hint but not much that people think that it could work for the big screen because TV and film mediums are different. I remember watching the 2004 Phantom of the Opera but I know it’s after.

The only movie musicals that existed are from around the time like Rocky Horror Picture Show, Cabaret, and Little Shop of Horrors. Notice they aren't exactly mainstream but rather relegated to cult classic status than anything the Disney movies that have been recognized for keeping the musical theatre formula in the public eye even when the movie musical was killed off by Hello Dolly. Even Grease and SNF count as outliers as they didn't exactly open the doors after Hello Dolly's failure. I still consider Xanadu on the same line as LSOH and RHPS.

The entire musical genre was sustained by the Disney Renaissance and really Disney is the only thing keeping the musical genre both then and now. I have so many mixed feelings that while the live-action Disney musicals are generally lifeless (I don’t consider Cinderella 2015 as a musical, more of a fairytale romance drama), they are still musicals that follow the traditional Broadway songs like I Am, I Want, Villain, etc so I guess the new generation knows at least the traditional musicals alongside the jukebox musical process however toothless the live-action and loads of current modern jukebox musicals are. The best modern jukebox musicals that are known to the wider public are Moulin Rouge, Mamma Mia, and & Juliet at the moment. LaLa Land is a good original musical but The Greatest Showman is entertainingly original but with no flow between the story and the songs. Mamma Mia definitely connects the world between ABBA and the world it sets in great and is one of the better jukebox musicals, but the story is less than impressive admittedly. The original movie musicals are not well-known just like stage musicals. The Hollywood ones are Broadway stage-to-film adaptations but the directors lacked the understanding of the theatre medium or why those stage musicals work in the first place to adapt it to the big screen. Looking at you, Tom Hooper, you must never step foot near a stage musical again.

Growing up with musicals in the first place will blindside others that in spite of musicals being one of the many Oscar baits musicals just aren't the tentpole titan they used to be prior to Hello Dolly. Even now, the musicals that tend to garner attention in Oscar talks are the Tom Hooper musicals with the exception of Cats. The gritty realism and the question of why everyone is singing just don't jive with the emotionality and vibrancy of musicals. The suspension of disbelief is cut between the screen and the theatre and how do they cope with a happy medium such as in animation or internal logic of the world.

Out of all Baz’s films, I hold a soft spot for Moulin Rouge! the most. Perhaps it was my first entrance into a live-action movie musical (Brandy's Cinderella is my first entrance to TV musicals and indirectly stage musicals and what I saw first before MR) but it’s still an okay movie. I’ll give it three stars. Admittedly, not one of my fave movies but in terms of musicals and romance, it holds a major spot.

It has its problems like the racist play (I know Bollywood is one of your inspirations but it shouldn't have to be played out like that. I mean I was fine with the Broadway making a new play without the Indian trappings though everywhere else was fine.). The secondary characters don’t get development like the Bohemian troupe and Nini. I know it isn’t the best movie but think of MR as a grand romantic gesture embodying Bohemian ideals, silly grand romantic yet deep showing freedom beauty truth, and love in all its showiness.

The Broadway version, while expanding the secondary characters and getting rid of the cultural appropriation, butchered the love triangle, made weird decisions with the couple, failed to make the Duke the entitled menacing clown that he is instead of just relenting at the end (because that’s not the point? Why the fuck is he singing money when he has the money? Why is he the only consistent male lead? Still evil but he didn’t come off as the true villain in the end. That honor went to his rival, Broadway Christian. If anyone thought the movie Christian was a piece of shit and/or disturbing, then you haven't seen the Broadway version because that Christian was the worst in the second act.), the Satine and Christian's romance just wrecked (nothing against older Satine finds her home in MR as opposed to the caged bird younger Satine. Just different flavors with different vulnerabilities. I just have a problem with Christian's arc overall as he seems different from the genuine gentle romantic soul; why is he this whiny loser than an actual romantic? Act 1 Christian was fine but the rest of the time Christian was not my Christian. Maybe the music just doesn't have the Orpheus and Eurydice element which is the point.), Broadway Christian just not being a wide-eyed romantic idealist but some guy who is definitely not Christian I know, and the crucial musical numbers from the film receive downgrades. By making the Duke likable, they don't seem to understand why the movie made it clear that we root for Christian and Satine. There is nothing wrong with developing the Duke to be more than the incel creep from the film. Still, when the Duke is by far the most fun and believable character in the whole show and fucking up the love triangle and the romance centerpiece, all we are left with is a hollow love story that isn't self-aware outside of the happier ending I guess.

My Godoka, Elephant Love Medley, El Tango De Roxanne, One Day I’ll Fly Away, Come What May, and Your Song, you deserve so much better than what Broadway had done to you. I swear I’ll cry if I have to listen to the Broadway version over the sincere story-relevant songs. Seriously, the El Tango de Roxanne Broadway version just makes me cry with frustration and crystallization of just how poorly done the love triangle is on Broadway. Because Broadway clearly doesn’t understand the point. Why did they remove Queen’s The Show Must Go On when they clearly got another Queen song in their version of ELM? Just why while Crazy Rolling was just acceptable but no dice on being compelling? Even if Satine’s motive had changed, Firework is not the song to go especially as the emotional One Day I’ll Fly Away equivalent. Satine wouldn’t have all the bird motifs if the song doesn’t mean anything. Your Song is now the secret song rather than Come What May which I have many opinions about. There’s a reason why it’s the only original song and for the show making the only original song not be as impactful despite having the reprises is just weird. There’s a different context for the song but given Come What May’s reprises, it should’ve made more impact. Somehow it just doesn’t land because it was just another duet than the importance an original song in a jukebox musical has. Nature Boy (and Lady Marmalade and Because We Can) was the only song not ruined by the musical version!

Even when they used older more timeless music like Aha's Take on Me, Elvis's' Can't Help Falling In Love With You, Beatles' All You Need Is Love, etc aren't doing anything creative with it or building/maintaining focus on the fucking story with it or using it like the emotional songs that the movie had done because their main problem was mashing it up without considering how the movie did it. I laugh because no matter what era, there are just too many songs but not enough development on the romantic centerpiece - and when they did focus on the romance, it's horrid because Christian and Satine didn't look like they want to spend the rest of their lives together. Because it sure as hell confused on what direction it wants: is it a satire, tragic melodramatic love story, comedy, or naughty cabaret? It didn't have a straight line that knows what it is like the movie which is aware it's a melodramatic tragic love story with tight tone shifts from comedy to tragedy and draws attention to it. The Broadway played things so fucking straight that it's tedious to sit through.

I have zero issues with Broadway needing more numbers as well as replacement numbers for songs they couldn’t get. I understand that in traditional musical theatre, there are required numbers such as the I Want and Villain songs. In the end, the Broadway soundtrack in its entirety is merely serviceable but far too many numbers at the expense of the romantic centerpiece.

Fuck making Christian emotionally manipulative so Satine had to admit her love just to save him! What the actual fuck when Christian walking out of her life forever is enough for Satine who was overcome with love can't help but sing out how she really feels! Fuck Broadway Christian is just so disappointing. No matter how good the Broadway actor like Aaron Tveit is, the Broadway arc for Christian is just so disappointing and not the Christian I know, the gentle yet passionate Christian who genuinely loves Satine and shows how much he loves her by treating her like a person because that's the point. This one just feels disappointing overall.

The ending felt too celebratory. It’s a party because why not?! The movie respects Satine’s death more than this mess. I understand the Moulin Rouge establishment and everyone else got a relatively happier ending but the Broadway never respected Satine’s death in the finale and it’s just disappointing.

There’s nothing with a romp. It’s just that the dignity of the darkness isn’t given its dues and won’t stand against its contemporaries and the movie itself.

Technically, I know that any of the Broadway singers are far better technical performers at their jobs than the celebs who were selected (regardless Ewan Mcgregor and Nicole Kidman are good singers or pitch-corrected when that isn’t the point as it’s the chemistry and the heart of the performances make the romance great) but Godoka, the film version, and the film soundtrack have so much heart rather than having songs going in and out. Talented singers or not, when the songs felt more like they were there for popularity to the point my thought is 'what song is next?' than advancing the story, the Broadway soundtrack is more serviceable than anything I'll play over and over again. Like, there is a reason why I'll listen to the film soundtrack and the film versions than the Broadway soundtrack.

Perhaps there is something wrong with the Broadway version's libretto. Or might as well be one of the worst librettos on Broadway. The romance no matter the actor and actress just off with lackluster chemistry (believe me, I have seen bootlegs of different casts and still cannot see the romance. Next up, Jamie Muscato and Melissa James!). Individually, they’re fine but together it’s just off. The movie's chemistry and performances are fantastic because pessimism and optimism sparked into the flirty banter while on Broadway the vague anti and pro-love are just that and don’t show enough of the romance. It seemed so focused on the music rather than using the music to advance the story. The only thing in its favor is really its incredible set and costume design with great performances that probably didn't matter it's a terrible book.

One thing in MR’s favor is just how self-aware the movie is. It doesn’t take itself too seriously yet when it comes down to the love story, it feels genuine, and the fact that the music shows that they still want to tell a story.

It honestly feels like the Broadway version isn't self-aware and played things so straight that the goofy yet genuine version felt more willing to push all emotions out than having it so staid. Just be big and loud because that's the point of Moulin Rouge with an exclamation point!

Elephant Love Medley is a medley that seamlessly makes pre-existing songs into a cohesive song that tells a story. The focus was a conversation and the couple finally acted on the love at first sight as well as their previous encounter with Your Song. Broadway failed as an organic medley, shuffling love-related songs as if its life depended on it. Again, Broadway failed to tell a story.

El Tango de Roxanne is the benchmark that the jukebox musical aspires to be, turning a pre-existing song and turning it to an evocation of emotion and atmosphere. The lyrics are telling a story while the music and its arrangement expressed and heightened the characters' emotions. The song is also layered with original lyrics for Christian, showing that the team knows where the heart belongs because why trust the emotional daggers to someone else when you know how to wield it yourself? (This is the same thought process behind Shrek's soundtrack as well with the pop songs as the external pressures while the original sound is the true selves. Because the original music would not have worked if it weren't for the pop music.) The movie version with the addition of Come What May was just so wonderful.

And this is one of the many reasons why the Broadway version failed as Christian is only supposed to sing the original lyrics while the Roxanne tango must only be sung by his friends trying to tell him that they know better than he knows. Fucking up the performance of the song which should never be messed with just to give Christian more lines that made no sense according to the narrative. It should’ve never been Christian’s song. By reverting back to the original aka not the movie version but the Police thereby making it a straight-up cover for the lead’s belting showcase, the transformed song is now a plain cover and just not good. The movie cut out ‘put on the red light’ wisely after the first time and kept it in a minor key with Christian’s counter melody playing off it completely transformed the song into musical theatre. Just basically repeating 'put on the red light' was not how the song worked in the movie! The movie wisely cut it to keep it in a minor key and to keep the energy of the song! The Broadway El Tango de Roxanne is mangled to hell and back! The so-called musical theatre arranges the songs as direct covers with no changes except for belting but not as the musical theatre the movie does for the emotion. Winning Best Orchestration is an insult to the movie's complete transformation of the music. Outside of some gems, the Broadway overall isn't doing anything new or inventive, just covers when the film transforms the music.

Ya know if you wanted to give the Bohemians more, then give Santiago his shining piece! Christian already has a part in Crazy Rolling which is The Show Must Go On equivalent (I have so many words for that change regardless of its acceptability in the song quality. I adore the opera version of The Show Must Go On and just wish there is something better for the Broadway.) but at that point, I just want Christian to have the right amount of songs, not to take up songs that are other characters' rightful shining moments. Just let Satine and Zidler sing that damn song! Just let Santiago loose with his defining moment! Just do anything at all so that the poorly-written Christian has the right songs to illustrate his pain! Do anything else at all to illustrate the emotion rather than have poorly done covers that do not do well against the movie! The jukebox quality is so bad on Broadway I wanted to grab it by the scruff and point it to the movie. It really doesn’t know how to take a breather and let the emotional songs where the not-so-contemporary 70-80s (or older since we're also counting on Tanguera by Mariano Mores here) rock/jazz ballads era came from and keep the nightclub/comedy songs on the modern era popular songs from the past decade. Broadway tried to be emotional but failed at the crucial moments because it’s all contemporary instead of placing them in categories. It doesn’t know how to use contemporary music.

Honestly, I wish jukebox musicals are like Moulin Rouge where the songs were chosen thoughtfully in the context of the music, their lyrics, and the role they play in the advancement of the story. Elephant Love Melody and El Tango de Roxanne are what the jukebox musical's untouchables that none had been able to compare, challenge, or stand beside.

Honestly, I think Moulin Rouge doesn’t follow the rules of a jukebox musical if there were any tight rules. Baz knows when to use original music to show the characters’ true feelings. The secret to a jukebox musical is in the best, the most memorable, and most powerful song must be original hence we see the glimmer of Come What May and Christian's lyrics in El Tango de Roxanne and Come What May itself.

We also see this with The Book of Life with original songs I Love You Too Much and The Apology Song. Again, the secret of a jukebox musical is the original that is powerful and memorable.

Moulin Rogue transcended the trappings of the jukebox musical. That's how great the Moulin Rouge movie soundtrack (the official soundtrack is just disappointing on just how little it offers in terms of how the movie played it out because we want the movie renditions) really is.

Honestly, the only jukebox musicals that came close are Mamma Mia and The Book of Life yet Moulin Rouge the movie remains the crème de la crème what a jukebox musical could be in its best form.

I don’t think you can’t unsee Moulin Rouge as some jukebox musical. All the songs are character and plot-relevant, advancing the story forward. In a typical jukebox musical, the music is haphazard and just there for the audience to point out they know that song and like it which the Broadway version doesn’t make that genre of musicals better when the movie reinvigorates what the jukebox musical could do, and do well. Though, unlike the movie version, the music seems still brand new instead of choosing from songs that are for the story. From what I always hear from the movie version, songs are not chosen at random and the love ballad wasn’t chosen willy-nilly because they exhausted their search. I just wish they look at every song written and see if it’s character and story while seamlessly blending the melodies. Broadway doesn’t do that one well in ELM though there is some good in this version with the mixing when everywhere else was fine. Hey, at least Backstage Romance, Shut Up and Raise Your Glass, and Freedom Beauty Truth Love are great. There is some good music on Broadway but it’s not enough to tell the story that it should’ve done and largely failed to transform the songs into a new context or do something new/inventive with it because covers are the bare minimum of a jukebox musical and only rearranging songs just for belting (instead of transforming it into the musical theatre of any kind like opera) along with swapping upbeat to ballad and vice versa or just in a different key but little change too much else are another things that are just minimal. Firework is the worst here. Transform the songs into a new genre nobody thought of, recontextualize them into something new, rearrange them into a new genre that nobody thought of, drop certain keys to keep it in a certain tone, make counter melodies, combine it with a classical song, add original lyrics, make it exciting, do what the Moulin Rouge movie had done!

Musicals are driven by emotions, not by logic. Tom Hooper dragging the musical theatre genre kicking and screaming into realism was pretty bad to watch as he's too blinded by the awards and praise for his film style to even bother understanding the musical genre just as Kay Cannon seemed embarrassed that Cinderella 2021 was even a musical. I was disappointed by the Broadway version of Moulin Rouge precisely it plays so straight instead of leaning into the melodrama the more self-aware movie version had done. Moulin Rouge wasn't supposed to be so staid, but full of kinetic powerful emotions.

Please I’ll watch Moulin Rouge Broadway over the Dear Evan Hansen movie anytime. At least, you can laugh at Cats the movie despite its pure lack of understanding of the musical and just music in general (one song is all the movie got right! One fucking song!). Dear Evan Hansen the movie was pure ego for Mark towards Ben instead of telling the story well on the silver screen; aside from one upgrade from the musical, it’s literally bad to sit through because you can’t laugh at it. Honestly, because of Evan's youth and the play know Evan’s actions are inexcusable, the music is great out of context while they are so uncomfortable in context. DEH isn’t a top fave or even remotely bad by any means, just a story that is more uncomfortable than mediocre or plain bad.

I might seem really harsh with the Moulin Rouge Broadway but this is the same opinion I have with fanfic (and other fics) I won't name at the moment as well as other media (Bridgerton). I am willing to watch/read it again but it's not something I would consider putting on my fave list any time soon. At least the MR Broadway version is enjoyable. I just prefer the movie version while accepting MR Broadway's expansion on the secondary characters and diversity without the cultural appropriation only because they fucked up character-wise with Christian & Duke (by making him lovable and hateable yet the most consistent main cast lead) and romance-wise with everything else. Individually, Broadway Satine is fine with more agency. Still, caged bird Satine made sense with her lack of agency or what little she has (her affair with Christian, her desire to run away with Christian, planning to sleep with the Duke but chose not to yet her self-sacrifice attempts are always destroyed, choosing Christian at the end of the movie, using her last words for her last request). I just do not want her with either the Duke or Christian on Broadway. I will root for her and Christian in the movie but will not root for them in the Broadway version.

It's not likely my critique especially as a lover of the movie would mean much to the tourists. Broadway is sustained by tourists and a wealthy East Coast base. The Broadway version of Moulin Rouge is a huge tourist draw that is doing just fine without any big stars as Aaron Tvelt and Karen Olivo are taking their final bows, Derek Klena taking a hiatus, and more cast announcements coming out for the leads. Even the recent announcement of Jojo as Satine was just the right amount of interest but not the type of stunt casting for box office needs; she hits the nostalgia factor for millennials yet is a fantastic singer so she'll be doing the holdover until summer sales.

Anyway, Baz Lurhmann revitalized the movie musical genre and his influence reigned till this day. I mean we wouldn’t have all the imagined spots and play with time so much in musicals, won’t we?

As much as I don’t like the closeups of dance numbers when all I want to see is the choreography, it’s still the movie musical genre. At least in Moulin Rouge, the snappy editing as well as seeing the choreography makes it worthwhile because the editing serves a purpose. The editing of close-ups is not that story-driven. At least MR lets you see the choreography.

You can see the influence of the new and old; the fantasy and the reality; the showstoppers and the emotional. The blending of modern music and old times isn't anything new. However, in modern times, it's more felt.

Even in non-musical forms, we got oldie songs in OFMD. Like Moulin Rouge the movie, the era used timeless orchestrated songs. It's not there to be belted out but to be sung on those featured at the endings. Compared to the golden era of piracy, those songs aren't modern but still timeless. Because that's the point OFMD and MR the movie are aiming for.

Bridgerton got the instrumental modern songs though I have mixed feelings about certain songs.

It can be done well as those examples are recent. If not done well, you get audiences laughing in the emotional moments as seen in the Broadway version of MR and the thought occurring is ‘I know that song! I like the musical now!’. I’m sorry but as much as I like Thank You Next and Wildest Dreams and didn’t like Girls Like You, my first thought isn’t that for actually liking the soundtrack. I was far too concerned with how the story and characters are going in conjunction with the music. I like Stranger Things soundtrack despite my many problems with the show.

In The Greatest Showman, Rocketman, and so much more, you can see the Moulin Rouge influence.

The Greatest Showman was trying to be the Moulin Rouge for the next generation albeit with originals. The major difference is that outside of two songs that move the story forward in any way even after Rewrite the Stars came after three minutes after the romantic subplot characters met because at least the romance impacts the story forward, the majority are inspirational songs. It's all extravaganza with no thought process behind the original songs for the thinner story than Moulin Rouge. At least Moulin Rouge's story was helped by its self-awareness and the fact that the songs are plot-prevalent including the softer songs that can be featured in just a single scene that does have emotional weight like Some Day I'll Fly Away and A Fool to Believe. The movie in itself was a hollow commercial montage with less than fleshed-out characters and relationships and really don't think too hard about it. It's all about the entertainment and sensation of being at a circus than the atmospheric heightened world of Moulin Rouge. I don't hate the film as I'm more eh and not sure about even liking it. About two and a half stars, the only way I could imagine the film even working outside of its poor narrative is the real Barnum piecing together a fictional version of himself that was so accepting and saintly because he would do that. It does have its strengths as a feel-good movie just as long as you are not thinking about the story or any historical detail. The difference between Moulin Rouge and The Greatest Showman is that Moulin Rouge knows it's heightened and the audience knows it's a heightened world, buying into the love at first sight easily. The Greatest Showman for all its pizazz doesn't have enough of that heightened world to buy into when the songs only have two songs that are plot-relevant while the other songs are there for inspirational acceptance. It's a heightened world but when we don't even get the interactions we do get with Christian and Satine from the brief dance they shared and the conversations they had after the Duke went out of the boudoir briefly as well as the Your Song and the misunderstanding they had prior to Your Song, the star-crossed interracial couple shared three minutes prior to their love song. There just wasn't enough for the trope of love at first sight to set in because it's all about the sensation when we barely know these characters whereas we got to know the characters of Christian and Satine both in and out of their relationship. Even Elephant Love Medley still took some time as we even got the conversation leading up to said medley including Some Day I'll Fly Away. When Moulin Rouge got three stars, yeah. I was kind enough to up it one star for its strengths and a half for the two songs for story progression in any way. I mean the secondary characters don’t have that much of a role in MR but at least we see their personalities and what little they do get whereas Broadway expanded them to the romance’s detriment. As much as I shut my brain off regarding this movie, it's admittedly entertaining because at least I can analyze Moulin Rouge and enjoy other fandoms using the MR AUs to tell what they want whereas the surface-level everything in TGS is just there.

Like, musical numbers are trendy pop music fare than musical theatre. Moulin Rouge actually made an opera version of The Show Must Go On and puts more effort into the arrangements than Pasek and Paul who had more recent pop music than actual identifiable musical theatre identity. At least in La La Land, the music actually fits even though the homage to the golden age of musicals is so superficial.

I don't mind the musical numbers. Heck, it's even the highlights and entertaining but make no question there is no connection between the emotionality and characters beyond the shallow. Because I know the difference between art and entertainment and how it can be both, I think it's just sad I just can't bring myself to like it more than just a mediocre piece of work that is more determined to entertain than to have a decent story coupled with it. At least Moulin Rouge for all its cliches is actually self-aware of its melodrama and leaned into it. TGS focused so much on the entertainment the 'heart' suffered as we do not get to know the freaks in which these songs all proposed the diversity to focus on the white male lead.

Heck, even Chicago the movie musical used editing in its musical scenes to tell a story.

Baz opened the door to a vibrant and impossible world that can be achieved as the modern movie musical. When the oldie movie musical is in doses and homages nowadays, the colorful world the movie musical could be in the future.

Movie musicals from The Greatest Showman and West Side Story showed what the modern movie musical could do now. Generally, from what I have seen in modern movie musicals, the convergence between musical theatre and film must be either realism or dreamlike stylism. The Greatest Showman and Rocketman can show the dreamlike stylism still work just as Into the Heights and West Side Story leaned more toward realism so much that musical numbers do not detract from the central story that is told in the film medium.

Dear Evan Hansen the movie leaned so hard onto the realism that it actually hurt it, not the least of the loss of so many numbers. It looked more like an indie flick where they could use the musical numbers as imagined spots with the important talks that were sung be sung to each other.

Cats leaned into realism as per Tom Hooper's Les Mis. Tom Hooper, like Joel Schumacher, is a director best not to direct movie musicals. Seriously, the heteronormality of Rum Tum Tugger and Mr. Mistoffelees is turned towards the so-called protagonist Victoria. It's one of the major problems for sure but when paired with the bad music that just stopped because the director is outright embarrassed by these numbers, it's just rotten to sit through.

And that's on the most recent turnout I can remember. Mamma Mia movies are just fine chick flicks made for women and as far as combining jukebox with the world goes, it's one of the best examples for a non-biomusical but for the oeuvre of a musician.

So far, we are ranging from decent to utter trash when it comes to modern movie musicals.

While I don't think musical theatre should want to get validation from Hollywood it wants them for awards bait, Broadway on its own is just for tourists. It's a tiny slice in which the award show dedicated to them is myopic and whatever awards are marketing bait. Who cares Moulin Rouge the Broadway musical has one of the worst librettos, it's still well-performed! Cats have a terrible libretto too but who cares when it's just so out there! Phantom's story is flawed but there is no getting around that the songs are just catchy.

There are more jukeboxes now there but there is a future coming and hopefully more innovative music than just Lin-Manuel Miranda.

While people have built on what the modern movie musical could do, the jukebox musical doesn’t have that many gems.

From ego vanity projects to focusing on the jukebox aspect than the musical aspect to failing at writing altogether, jukebox musicals don’t have the best of pickings. Even the slightly better ones are usually slim. There are individual moments but it’s exactly that. The latest James Corden and Camila Cabello’s Cinderella 2021 is just an example of how the selection of songs is less about the plot and characters and more about the names because I really think they just look at the name of the songs and their popularity than actually thoughtfully picking songs and elevating it into a new context. Even their original song did little to advance the story when the original song in a jukebox musical is an important piece.

The hilarious thing is that both Cinderella and Moulin Rouge are cliche simple stories but one is self-aware yet creates a genuine romance and musical from thoughtful choices and the other doesn’t try and pick what’s popular while being self-aware to the point of obnoxiousness. I seriously cannot name a number that advances the story in any capacity, not even the original song that just blended altogether rather than stick out and is memorable. In terms of a first look, it’s mediocre. However, upon scrutiny with the addition of not having good costuming, score, soundtrack, and writing, it turned from mediocre to bad that it’s not worth it to put behind as white noise or even watchable as I could watch other mediocre Cinderellas even Ella Enchanted the movie which I have problems with due to my love for the book. Even The Book of Life is a self-aware simple story as well but uses its songs to push the story than to stop it in its tracks just for some number that made no sense in anything.

Glee has songs that were initially for the story and characters with episodes dedicated to particular artists or mashups. However, for better or worse, the songs are made by a streamlined factory than anything that was made by a producer. I like some songs but a lot of it really sounds more like a token you get at an arcade to get prizes than anything of substance. MR has substance simply because of the thought behind the song choices hence it’s so iconic.

I'm amazed Glee chose to use the film version of Come What May the first time I heard it including the instrumentals rather than the soundtrack version. I mean the movie versions will always trump over all the covers I heard and the Glee version is just serviceable even when we are having a gay couple here. I'm demi bi but I'm wary to use the Glee version in my wedding. Glee’s music is serviceable and not anything to write home about outside of a few numbers. Made worse that it just covers that don’t further the story and failed to elevate into a new context or use in inventive new ways. The mashups are rarely good which are just as bad as MR Broadway.

They used the soundtrack version of Sparkling Diamond more than the movie version though. Considering that Brody was supposed to sing El Tango de Roxanne...yeah, I think the sex worker actor-in-training is singing that instead of anybody else says a lot of missing the point of the song.

Glee is just ‘Let’s throw the top 40 and maybe some indie songs while we’re at it?!’. It’s a musical show but the substance is clearly without direction, just popular songs with no rhyme or reason instead of being a decision to tell the story effectively. I know they don’t have much time to film in between choosing the numbers but Godoka, it could’ve been more than just a fast-paced but overall poor story that failed in its messages by the finale. On one hand, I can see where Glee does deserve praise but on the other, I cannot forgive its unapologetic hate while parading around as if it can speak (not examine as it rarely does that) on serious topics that it tossed at a canvas like a Jackson Pollock painting. Sure there are original songs but like everything else, the originals aren't even that memorable outside of a couple numbers.

It’s camp but it's just so bad at it. More exhausting than anything else. The crazy sets that in no way a high school glee club can afford cannot be imagined spots for these kids because they had to be real. Couldn’t it just be imagined spots than school money the glee club spending frivolously?

Godoka, when Glee is bad, it's bad. But when Glee's good, it's really good.

Let's just sum up what makes a great jukebox musical:
  • Must advance the narrative from the plot to the characters' emotions
  • Songs must be chosen thoughtfully as the context, lyrics, and role they play in the advancement of the plot matter not just originally but into the new context. The story is key. It must fit the context of the scene and elevate the song into a new context such as a simple love song turned into a declaration of love. The song choices must be airtight in their relevance to the plot and characters.
    • Changes such as gender pronouns are usually spotted easily and stick out. However, if it is seamless that it seemed like it was written for that exact purpose, then it wouldn't stick out because it's seamless. Sticking near verbatim to a song should be noted as again changed gender pronouns unless done well stick out.
    • Emotionally resonant songs must be chosen carefully. It can be modern like & Juliet. Moulin Rouge used rock/jazz ballads from the 70s-80s (Nature Boy, Your Song, Some Day I’ll Fly Away, El Tango de Roxanne, and The Show Must Go On) and older (because what gave El Tango de Roxanne's oomph was the 50s Mariano Mores' Tanguera) but the Broadway version failed in this aspect to use modern music in the fashion of & Juliet and failed to see what kind of eras the movie version was using.
    • Modern songs must be chosen carefully. In Moulin Rouge the movie, the nightclub and comedy songs used songs of the last decade at that time; it knows when to step out of that and into the orchestrated traditional songs that are not used for belting showcases. Look at & Juliet for how to use modern music carefully for emotional resonance. It can be done but if not done well, you’ll likely have people laughing at these emotional moments.
  • Creative and inventive new ways the songs can be adapted. The songs are recognizable yet the arrangements made it a standout and more than just a straight cover.
    • Straight covers are a no. By intention, a jukebox musical is a cover compilation. However, it's just a covered song compilation but not nothing inventive or newly done with it. Unless it is seamless to the story in question, the covers will stick out and won't be good no matter how well-performed it is.
    • Add original lyrics, particularly if some of it could be from the original song(s) present or new lyrics representing the internal conflict/emotions, into the newly covered song itself. Because the emotionality of one's character differed from the character singing the covered song to tell something to that someone. Because wielding the emotional daggers yourself rather than having the words to someone else is what matter. Give the original lyrics in this newly rearranged song the importance it has.
    • Make counter melodies, make it into a genre nobody thought of, make it musical theatre, make new accompaniment/notes/etc, rearrange the songs into something new, and transform the song!
    • Drop or add keys and/or lyrics to keep it a certain tone. For example, El Tango de Roxanne is entirely in a minor key with the counter melody from Christian's tenor, dropping 'put on the red light' after the first time, only mixing it in the tail end of the song with Christian's lyrics.
  • The original song must be the best, most powerful, and most memorable of them all because it's the secret of a jukebox musical. Give the original song the significance and dignity it represents. Heck, even contrast the original songs in comparison to the other songs. For example, the gentle Come What May and the original lyrics sung by Christian in El Tango de Roxanne were soft for the most part but they contrast greatly with the fast-paced songs. The Book of Life's I Love You Too Much and Apology Song is so memorable in its jukebox music.
  • A marriage of the modern and the world. This rarely happens in the jukebox musical world but when it does, it's magnificent as in the case of Moulin Rouge the movie.
I mainly used Moulin Rouge the movie as an example but it's not my fault that the movie soundtrack is just so fantastic in its arrangement and complete transformation of the music they used, elevating it into something new and making it their own. You can tell that it's a Narcoleptic Argentian singing El Tango de Roxanne, not Sting, and the original lyrics in it as well as the countermelody and keeping it in the minor key and cutting certain lyrics out to maintain the energy made it fantastic.

To call the movie's jukebox musical all fluff is an insult to how the songs are for the story and its advancement. Seriously, I can tell you which number is supposed to do in the story.

Godoka, is the Book of Life's jukebox musical all fluff if that was the case too? I Will Wait isn’t exactly a typical I Want song. The closest thing to an I Want song and probably the I Want song in Moulin Rouge is Some Day I’ll Fly Away.

A jukebox musical isn't exactly traditional musical theatre. Yeah, there can be mimicking of an I Want and Villain song as I have seen this happen in the Broadway version of Moulin Rouge - you already know my opinions about that as I completely understand expanding the roster of songs to include the I Want and Villain songs if only the songs were transformed and used correctly which the Broadway failed - and & Juliet but that does not immediately constitute Moulin Rouge the movie's use of the music they selected as all fluff.

Moulin Rouge the movie cut through the stereotypes of jukebox musicals that didn't even exist yet and remained the best and most important jukebox musical in film and theatre history. Moulin Rouge is a one-of-a-kind movie that is hard to duplicate. The movies that followed tried but it’s only at the surface level rather than understanding Baz was celebrating the film and musical mediums he’s appreciating. Even Baz Luhrmann himself tried to do that but failed.

Just as how to not do a jukebox musical:
  • Song choices out of popularity and song name. Cinderella 2021 is the worst here, giving no thought to the context of the songs they chose nor do they choose to elevate it. No song role in advance of the plot here. These songs are just there less for the story and more for the song name than anything else.
    • It's the stars whose obviously singing it, not the characters. If I see Idina Menzel and not the stepmother, that's the script's problem.
  • Too much of a jukebox. When the priority is to throw in as many songs, then the story will be taken for a backseat.
  • Straight covers. No changes, nada.
    • Gender pronoun changes stick out like a sore thumb. No fluidity.
    • No transformation of the song. The Broadway version of El Tango de Roxanne is the worst here. Reverting it back to the Police and rewriting it just for a belting showcase is a no-no. Not only it shouldn't be Christian's song, but it's also horribly mangled and nothing inventive was done outside of just making it a belting showcase. Fuck that.
  • Blending original songs all together with the covered songs.
  • The marriage of the world with the music just did not work. The songs stick out instead of doing something with the music and providing nothing as a result.
Cinderella 2021 is one of the worst jukebox musicals out there. There is no thought process behind them beyond just popularity. Just look at the name and that's it. What few original songs it has - the Lin-Manuel Miranda-esque royal announcement raps, that one original song, the King's serenade for the Queen - blended together and isn't memorable at all. Seriously, the royal announcement raps didn't show any creativity that Lin-Manuel has.

I don’t think Dear Evan Hansen the movie will kill the movie's musical genre. Seriously, we’re getting Wicked after this many long years.

I do not want to think about what would kill the modern movie musical. With how old musicals are referenced, I see something new done.

I mean when the new West Side Story was received well by the general public seeing that it could stand beside the original film and actually played by actual Hispanic actors who can sing and dance. Probably because the film medium and the Spielberg touch show it could be done and done well and can stand beside the originals proudly. I love the original West Side Story and do see how just like how Moulin Rouge the movie impacted the musical scene, West Side Story did as well but people have to admit that the cast is all white instead of the Hispanic cast it is supposed to be like the Puerto Ricans aren't there for the backdrop. I'm Vietnamese but I can see the impact just by having the cast be Hispanic and allowing their identity to come through. Cultural pluralism is where we're supposed to be going, not racial assimilation (looking at you, Bridgerton. The only way I could take any of that is pure fantasy, not an alternate universe kind of, just fairy tales. I'm sorry but like Hamilton, my history-loving heart could not take it as any more than just fantasy set in a world where there's no antiblackness or racism except homophobia is still prevalent but Hamilton only gets an upward point because at least it's using its music and cast to commentate as well as knowing Hamilton himself isn't really a good person to root for).

If that’s received well along with Tick Tock Boom showing how to adapt musicals well into the medium, we have many movie musicals in the future to look forward to.

With LMM showing how to innovate the movie musical and RRR being a different beast with their usage of musical numbers, there are signs we are getting into better adaptations complete with triple threats that Hollywood is now looking for. I just hope it would be better or pro shots would be in higher demand than they already are.

Bad Cinderella lashing out at bootlegs and especially TikTok which can help with a show’s popularity is just a terrible decision. Broadway is for and sustained by tourists and a relatively wealthy East Coast base but whoever is behind ALW’s new show where it’s clear he’s phoning it in is in for a reckoning.

Because the worst movie musical adaptations (Les Mis, Into the Woods, Rent, The Wiz, Phantom, Cats) are terrible and failed to capture what made the theatre work by non-theatre professionals who seemed to not only fail to understand musical theatre but avoid it altogether as they are respected filmmakers for serious movies. God, you think people would be against Tom Hooper as a musical theater director after Les Mis but nope, hopefully, Cats sealed the deal that he will and must not be within ten feet of a musical adaptation. I'd trust Baz Lurhmann to make another jukebox musical than trust Tom Hopper with a movie musical again because Baz certainly understands the theatricality and emotionality that is absolutely central to the musical concept. He completely understands the emotionality and theatrics of musical theatre because people sing out of emotions. Tom Hooper seemed embarrassed about musicals and tried his best to interrupt the music any chance he can even with the best and only number he got with Steven McRae. Not that there aren't any serious musicals but the musicals are all about the emotions and theatrics for the stage. And translating it to the big/small screen is hard with its different mediums. This is opposed by those who do know how musical theatre works and made it into enjoyable fests (Cabaret, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Little Shop of Horrors, Chicago, and even Hairspray). TV live musicals are a different beast and differ from professional shots.

It’s sad when a movie production is embarrassed they are even a musical in the first place, leaning into realism when the film medium demands realism and logic at the expense of people singing and dancing out of sheer emotion. There’s nothing wrong with the difference and the suspension of disbelief but a musical isn’t embarrassing when it can tell a story in a different way. Looking at you, Les Mis, Cats, and Cinderella 2021. It's really terrible to see Tom Hooper isn't comfortable and outright disinterested in the musical medium that it's pretty obvious he should never be handed a movie musical in the first place.

Tom Hooper and everyone behind the movie version of Cats are so engrossed in their hubris to win awards. Why else would celebs sign on if it were the fact that it's an Oscar-winning director behind the wheel and could get away with changing so much of the material it's unrecognizable just because they can't share the spotlight when that's the point of Cats? Why else is Tom Hooper willing to drag the musical genre kicking and screaming to the realm of realism just because he wanted more awards when his last musical stint won awards? Why else is the studio pushing for a Christmas release, forcing the animators who have to work with the stupid no-mocap thing which is just as bad as the music being kept offbeat and repeatedly piled on with crunch?

Considering his Les Mis is basically what people who hate Moulin Rouge see it for me, yeah...Tom Hooper, shoo, you must never set foot near a musical manuscript ever again. Steven Spielberg, yeah, I want you to make another musical again. I mean Tom Hooper failed to understand VFX and animation so I'd prefer watching James Cameron talk about how he is willing to partake in innovative technology. Even now, I am still in awe of his Titanic

I’m hesitant about the Wicked one but that’s because the last Oz movie failed to capture the feminism of the original books and why the fuck Wizard is a fraud, not some goddamn chosen one.

Say what you will about Moulin Rouge or R+J or Titanic, there is no denying their influence. While Titanic was actively aiming for awards, the other two weren't at first. Well, the Broadway version of Moulin Rouge certainly campaigned hard for the Tonys. Whether they deserved certain awards is subjective as I certainly think they don't deserve some of the awards they were given when those should be handed to the film.

Honestly, with more and more movie musicals to come, both jukebox and original, I hope the future is in good hands. Epic the musical seemed to be in such a good line from what I heard.

From Ratatouille and Bridgerton the musicals (though I don’t like the latter), we now have Epic and showing a new path. With TikTok being a breeding ground for theatre kids, professionals have kept a keen eye for scouting simply because the Ratatouille musical brought together a homegrown community just for creation. Basic as those shows and their songs are, there is no question that they bought together people. Until Barlow and Bear wrecked any goodwill they had with the fandom and doors are shut from them with the Grammy not even a fandom contribution trophy.

With jukebox more frequent than originals, the originals stick out and not just the popular ones like Wicked, Hadestown, and Hamilton. Epic could mean the future as a step forward since their predecessors.

I heard good things about & Juliet's jukebox musical though with MR Broadway's poor approach to using Katy Perry's song Firework makes me wary. I have nothing against Katy Perry, it's simply her lyrics that have that self-absorbed aspect that even her best songs have and it's hard enough to connect to her music outside of enjoying it as bubblegum pop which I have nothing against. I mean I can enjoy BTS' English tracks which are fun and meant to uplift some serotonin than having to do with the vast expansive discography that tells their story. The soundtrack largely tracks the hits of Max Martin and friends. I heard there is an original song in there too albeit from a pop singer but still an original song. From what I heard, it fits/changes the context with its seamless incorporation and sticking near verbatim to the originals that it feels like it was written for the show. Right now, going through the soundtrack before tracking down a slime tutorial. At least, it's keeping to 32 rather than the 70 MR Broadway has. When even the movie soundtrack didn't list every single song in the movie, Moulin Rouge has fewer songs than the Broadway version.

Again, this is about the movie musicals rather than the tv musicals, not the live tv musicals. I heard good things about Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Even Schmigadoon and Galavant show a love for musicals as well. Heck, even the latter know the importance of an emotional song. Glee is unfortunately the worst even when it did some good albeit limited.

While musicals as a whole are still popular today, the modern movie musical's potential hasn't been fulfilled yet.

With gems like Tick Tock Boom and West Side Story showing how cinematic language can interact and elevate the medium of the theatre, there are duds like Cinderella 2021 that showed how to not do a jukebox musical or a musical.

Originality is hard to come by these days in musical theatre with jukebox musicals all the rage. Either they are terrible (Moulin Rouge the Broadway, Cinderella 2021) or they are great (& Juliet). However, the Epic musical has all the things going for it to make it great.

And even then while there aren't a lot of original plays with original music, there is just a simple lack of innovation.

LMM is one such person showing that musicals don't have to remain the same thing over and over again. Showtunes are great but it's heading the same way as opera which hasn't moved on or innovated at all, remaining where it is for such a long-ass time.

LMM really shouldn't keep writing songs for Disney films whether animated or live-action though his output for the latter is genuinely terrible but compared to others trying to cop his style without understanding anything, it's still better but not that good. He really should just focus on movie musicals and musicals in general, just not in the corporate Disney sphere which will force him to write songs for their live-action flicks. He really should just take a backseat to everything and just direct movie musicals and help as an advisor for people in need of help with movie musicals. His songwriting isn't on a downhill spiral or anything like that but he should only pump out songs that he has a passion for, not what others in the corporate Disney wants him to do.

I noticed that there are just so many belting from the shows including Moulin Rouge when it shouldn’t have to. Sopranos and dance leading ladies don’t have much now outside of revivals pre-2006. It really was getting tiresome as I watched MR the Broadway whereas the movie version doesn’t belt.

Just any experimental music than just doing poor arrangements ala Moulin Rouge the Broadway musical. Yeah, I am never letting go of that even though it sounds great, the soundtrack on its own is just serviceable but in no way does it serve the story in any way the movie had done and remained timeless. I see & Juliet remaining relevant over Moulin Rouge the Broadway in terms of longevity, especially when the movie version remained so timeless even now.

Now, I know this in-universe Broadway was probably bad on purpose. Think of it this way, not only they had to contend with real-life events that forced changes (Spiderman not it due to the whole Mysterio thing) and fun changes (Antman) and just not knowing classified information. The people behind this musical won't know a dang thing about the personal stuff as well as the classified information. This is understandably the result of the lack of knowledge.

If we were to have our Rogers the musical, it would be information we already know made into a musical.

An in-universe play where Broadway has to make do with the little information they do have and they don't have access to tech to make it look just as real so they have stylized streetwear mimicking Spongebob the Musical's costuming and implied silhouette and Starkid's own costuming is just brilliant if you know. It might look shitty from an outsider's point of view especially since it's specifically written to unsettle Hawkeye in question who probably never understands Broadway or musical theatre with all the comic book set staging but given its in-universe popularity, it might be loved because it's campy.

And campiness is something we need.

Musical comedy shows are gems. The Schmig- series are love letters to subsets of musicals in certain time periods.

Galavant was such a good time as it came way before CEG.

I consider the Schmig- series either just lucky or a cult following among musical fans. It is after all made by musical fans for musical fans, understanding the tropes that made musicals work in the first place. Honestly, I was surprised to see the second season greenlit at all. I still haven't seen the second season yet or heard any of the numbers but it's something I want to get to.

Godoka, we’re in the era of Cats now in the second season. Hope to Arceus we see the next decade or so with the next season if it comes to pass.

A musical comedy just has so much potential. CEG shouldn’t be the only example but it was well received to garner that the story’s ending was made satisfactorily the same way.

I want more musical comedies. Galavant should come back because, with Schmig- series and CEG, the series can thrive. Disenchanted just made me miss Galavant more.

While this one is on a dubious stage, we got triple threats returning to the big screen. Hell yes after Russell Crowe and Gerard Butler, this is all the better.

Let's just hope whoever is behind the Disney live actions lets the cast sing with all their emotions so that we can hear it, not the stupid stuff Bill Cordon and Tom Hooper did with BATB and every musical Hooper has done. Richie didn't understand musicals so that's why the movie with the fun coming from the cast saving it is not a good musical.

I'm not blaming Emma Watson when it was whoever was behind the scenes ruining her vocal performances. It's just sad that she wasn't able to sing as decently as she could've all because of fear or whatever the producers feel, not helped by the fact Hooper want them to sing on set while the orchestra had to keep up with the singer instead of the other way around. Hooper doesn't know shit about performances and CGI so why do I bother with him?

Hopefully, with the successes of CEG and the cult following more or less with the Schmig- series, there is more to come with the musical comedy genre.

We do need more camp and just the embrace of tropes that doesn't necessarily mean it's just bad just because it embraces the joy of musical theatre.

Enemies-to-Lovers vs Rivals-To-Lovers

Just a brief note, my interest in MHA is still shot. Between the lack of regular updates even though the Dabihawks tag now has just past 10000 works on AO3 and I just can't skim through and nod with the direction theorized by people who know the characters best, I just can't be interested.

When I'm far more interested in just making Hawks and Dabi's Palaces and Dungeons and Endy's Palace, fuck even the Madam President and Nagant (all of them certainly have palaces as their goals/causes do distort their reality very much) and I have more fun creating Hawks' Shadow than I thought I would have, the Dabihawks tag is something I just look at odd times now. Aside from the Bachelorette series and the Moulin Rouge AU, I could barely read through any other because as much Dabihawks is my MHA OTP, the general interest in MHA was pretty much killed that usually sustained the ships I like and until I get back on it, I don’t know when or how.

Besides, I'm in the Stranger Things Steddie and Pokemon fandoms again. Pokemon draws me back like a moth to a flame. I'm teetering back on Persona given what I just said but it's a teeter as I'm just having fun with imagining little scenes and especially the Shadows eviscerating their real selves in front of the kids, heroes, villains, and the Persona characters at the scene.

I can't believe I have to put this as a separate post. I cannot believe people can't tell the difference between enemies and rivals-to-lovers ships. I cannot believe people just can't understand the basic concept of enemies.

I was utterly exasperated by the completely stupid reaction to Dabihawks and Akeshu. It's as if people don't understand the basic concept of enemies much less enemies that can reconcile and understand each other.

It's as if they never experienced popular ships from other fandoms when MHA and P5 had yet to exist. Have they experienced Suzalulu, Shizaya, and Lawlight?

I want to throw those ships to those people's faces and say that Dabihawks and Akeshu's popularity is expected and it's nothing unusual.

Legitimately, I question these guys even trying to contest Dabihawks and Akeshu when from all my years in fandom Dabihawks and Akeshu is nothing different from Suzalulu, Shizaya, and Lawlight.

For Godoka's sake, Lelouch killed Euphie!

To make true enemies-to-lovers, there has to be a power balance. If one side tried to kill the other with the other not trying to fight back, then it's actually abusive. Both sides have to fight each other be it with scathing remarks or with physical fighting which is attempted murder at the very least.

Akeshu got Akechi trying to kill Akiren certainly but at least Akiren is a far better fighter and can outsmart him. While here Akechi is the only one who would do the killing due to Akiren’s Thou Shalt Not Kill, Akiren can fight back and won’t take it lying down. Akiren won’t kill him but sure as hell will give him a fight that will have Akechi reeling.

In that Dabihawks fight, it was remarked by Dabi that sentimentality tripped up Hawks because if he wasn't so distracted by Twice Hawks could've better fought off Dabi. Hawks fought back even though it's pretty obvious Dabi won that fight only based on brute force, concentrating on Hawks' wings and just monologue. It was still a relatively equal fight even though Twice got the bum end of the deal.

Because that's the point when Horikoshi is making these two foils fight each other. They are equal.

It was remarked upon by Dabihawks fans that had the two not concentrated on their personal missions and been honest with each other, the life of Twice would have been averted as well as many others because those two would work better together if they want to be together.

This is the same case for Suzaku and Lelouch. Lelouch knows full well that he and Suzaku are better working together than apart and we see this in canon. The first time we see Lelouch and Suzaku actually work together albeit from opposite sides, they are spectacular.

Both sides are too principled and have to compromise for them to work.

As much as I see Hawks siding with the League fics and I like that, there’s just no way unless Hawks meet in the middle with Dabi. Hawks won’t go full villainy just as Dabi won’t go quietly for many reasons. Hawks have to let go of some but not all of it. He wouldn’t sacrifice thousands of lives for his own selfish wish even though he so badly deserves it; he doesn’t want to kill Twice but at the same time he can’t listen to the everyday distresses of the normal people joining PLF because the mission and the need to prioritize the needs of the many. I wonder if he spent more months he’ll adapt possibly. He’s been groomed so it will take a lot to break out of if he even wants to process anything at all, just pushing away potential bonds for the mission he has been spending the last 15 years dedicating himself to just as Dabi spent the past decade on his. Their missions have been something they dedicated so much of their time to so it will take a lot for Hawks and Dabi. That’s on top of their issues. The only way Twice can possibly be saved is if Hawks and Dabi chose to be emotionally honest and compromise.

This would've been the case for Dabihawks as well had Dabi and Hawks just been honest.

At this point, I have no idea what Dabihawks canon relationship even is. While some Dabihawks shippers hold out for the childhood friends theory, I have a preference for the chance-meeting fate kind of thing. That the two people destined for each other have their paths crossed coincidentally and fall hard for each other. Seriously, what is the point of that tear at the corner of Hawks' eye?! Is Dabi crying too?! We know Tokoyami and Dark Shadow cried but the subtlety of the tear on Hawks and the possibility Dabi is crying then just throw everything for a loop. What is Dabihawks canon relationship to the point Hawks will cry when he's preparing himself to die?! He sure has hell not crying the other times he's preparing to die in the case of the AFO fight at Gunga Villa ruins. We didn't see little Keigo cry himself! Except for again a subtle moment in the flashback when he saved the bus full of people.

I feel like a BXG all over again. Just what kind of relationship does the canon Dabihawks even have to have Hawks cry when he knows he's gonna die then and there when at other times when he's preparing himself to die, he didn't cry, implying that Hawks was hurt and upset by Dabi specifically?! Are they friends? Coworkers with benefits? Lovers?! Just what kind of relationship do they even have, Horikoshi, what did you intend to have?! For fuck's sake, Hawks is the first person to learn Dabi's true identity, not the LOV or Endy or Shouto. Why are Hawks adamant Dabi has to be someone and not some random person? Why does Dabi say Hawks wasn't looking at him, the looking motif attached to the Todorokis? Why is the conversation so loaded now looking back with the tear that throws everything off?

We could say Hawks was crying then because Keigo was pulled through the shattered mask of Hawks. Because the fight started out as Dabi vs Hawks but ended with Touya vs Keigo. Or crying out of pain because of you know.

Regardless, he's crying in a scene he was going to die when in others he's not even crying.

I was fine with the two divides of Dabihawks shippers wherein one camp is adamant there is no way there is a bond between them because they are far too focused on their missions with all the paranoia and suspicion while the other camp is adamant there is a bond that is having a divorce right now. Now it's likely with that tear and possibly tears from both sides, there is a bond but what kind of relationship?

This entire relationship is just ambiguous. Post-canon, I’ll rather see them develop a healthy friendship while still keeping it open-ended enough. Just a hint of a platonic friendship. Again, they can understand each other as do Togachako, DekuBaku, and DekuShiga. Again, even in canon, Togachako is going to end up having a platonic friendship too. It's very unlikely we're gonna get more than friendship. Besides, ship fixes are found in fics, not in canon. Again, if you have been in fandoms as long as I have, ship fixes are better found in fics than in canon. Why bother canonizing or insist it should be canon whereas shippers are drawn to the potential relationship and wish to explore it? Yes, I do agree that if it’s canon, the story potential will be upped coinciding with the themes and characters, but at the end of the day, it’s non-canon and whatever potential with the ship is best told in fanfiction.

I don't mind if Dabihawks won't meet again as long as their foil storylines conclude satisfyingly though it seems they will be in the Dabihawks divorce 2.0 for at least for that but afterward who knows. Individually, it's fine. On the other hand, Hawks had to confront Dabi about the wings at the very least.

For the love of Godoka, boiling it down to hate just because one tried to kill the other makes no sense. You are allowed to not ship them but say there is no way because of hate instead of being enemies. They’re enemies. The relationship is ambiguous but I always have disdain for people who just can’t see these two are foils who can understand the other.

Hawks don’t hate Dabi and we don’t know Dabi for Hawks but Dabi hates Hawks after the fight because that’s of the trauma, Dabi responds with overpowering emotions of hate. Dabi kept saying he doesn't care about the LOV when he does. Dabi has a tendency to say he doesn't care about somebody and does care.

Why are ShigaDeku, DekuBaku, and Togachako fine in understanding each other but not Dabihawks?

You know what, I'll throw my Dabihawks headcanons at you!

After much healing together and learning who Touya and Keigo are together, they lived together in this private beach house. Either they run away together and lived in another country or it's post-war where they are living on one of the coasts of Japan. Keigo works as a paramedic after retiring post-war while Touya works as a writer/artist/potterer because he would rather not destroy but create something with his hands without his fire. Just to be clear, they are already a married couple via elopement that they spontaneously have without considering anybody: the Todofam insisted on a vow renewal years after. They were already married before Rei and Best Jeanist married though this one depends whereas Rei and Best Jeanist married first before TouKei post-war while TouKei would marry first before Reijeanist in the running away scenario. Regardless, they are still the first of the Todosibs to marry. Yes, Reijeanist has surprisingly ensnared me though Dabihawks remained my OTP with Spinneraki in 2nd place. The kids though at this point are in a polyamorous relationship because I can't choose at this point. Rody and Toga are not helping, throwing them in this salad.

As a couple, TouKei likes to annoy each other as much as they annoy the family. Not helped the two are dramatic and the Todofam has to deal with it. They are annoying as fuck.

If I have to see Dabihawks to another ship, it would be Gomez and Morticia. Honestly, it’s a dynamic I like: scary, very sexual, devoted, in love, and romantic. In the Hawks chooses Dabi* or the happily ever after scenarios, this is what Dabihawks becomes openly, not caring that their PDA disturbs both sides though the villains had time to adjust though not without mental scars while the poor heroes have to witness especially Endy. Endy, the loser, has to watch his son be touchy-feely with a former colleague for their love was a chance encounter fateful meeting that turned the UST into ever investment of a relationship that they will be attached to the hip. After Endy, it would be HPSC, particularly the madam president. Ohh, how I would see her face that Hawks is now openly affectionate with his lover now husband, not giving a shit about her.

* As much as I like Hawks getting selfish for once and choosing Dabi while Dabi becomes selfless as he waits for Hawks to make the first move, it’s incredibly unlikely Hawks would choose not to kill Twice. If there is a work that showed Hawks choosing Dabi, it must come to an understanding of all the ramifications of averting the war and running away. If that fic is the only fix-it in the author’s mind, let me say that other fanfics that showed Hawks choosing Dabi before Twice’s murder and remaining in character are limited and I would like her take on that. I will not be pleased if it’s the only canon fix-it that she is ever going to write even when she admitted that she personally does not see any world where Hawks didn’t murder Twice and saying that Dabihawks will get back together regardless while also admitting Hawks choosing Dabi for once selfishly while Dabi becomes more selfless for waiting for the first move is her favorite flavor, whether she is talking about the talk where Hawks admitting he belongs to Dabi or just kissing him as the first move in the start of the romantic relationship or fuck even the different choice of instead of the murder, find another way to stop the war I do not know but I am not pleased. When I never once had any Dabihawks fics come close to my bookmarks, I would like to see other fix-its that take different routes. After her friend’s fic teased the other choice for that one shot, I am left wanting that fix-it when other fix-its are not to my tastes. Godoka, I sound entitled but when the selection for Dabihawks flavor is limited, I only found one fic that takes a lot from the author and had Hawks choose Dabi because I know that author admires the other author. Just anything at all that has that choice because another fic got so close but I need the next chapters to see if they’ll make it to my bookmarks. Seriously, while other fics mention the selfish choices, they never once touched on the Twice issue if at all. Considering canon Hawks is increasingly reaching a breakdown and slowly growing insane from his issues, Hawks is simply not self-reflecting and self-destructing in his toxic martyrdom. I’ll make sure he’ll self-reflect because the three Wild Cards will see nothing less than growth as they know Akechi and even Adachi did. I’m pretty sure Hawks’ Shadow is simply little Keigo wanting his real self to just look at him and reflect, overwhelmed with emotions that Keigo won’t let out. Oh, Hawks’ Shadow is delicious in both his Palace and his TV world Dungeon. I’m sure the three Wild Cards will be these therapists as they are authorized psychiatrists to help him through his PTSD and trauma he refused to acknowledge, and just turn away from. I’m sure Minato might see little of himself in him. Oh, I’m sure to write that these adult Wild Cards will ask thought-provoking questions through sheer charisma and will say Hawks will choose the terrible option because of the lives of many even if he can’t save the other person while also saying Hawks need all the help. Of course, they can’t sound invasive but their concern is so mighty that they, Tokoyami, Dabi, and the LOV will break his fortress walls for him to choose something for himself for once. They might even suggest other heroes who could break his walls down. Because breaking down the walls are far more necessary for him to grow as a person, the Wild Cards know the potential for growth there.

They are an artsy couple. They love Van Gogh's art and decorate their house with it. There are shelves of books all over the house. They go to museums and planetariums often yet just as much homebodies to relish in a quiet day together. They love stargazing as they chose their house for that reason, far from the city so they can see the stars. They love slow dancing together. Touya, a hopeless romantic, gave everything a romantic can take and give to Keigo who is just as much as a romantic.

They love nicknames for each other; it was when they were Dabi and Hawks, that they use as words of affirmation when they couldn’t say the words they desperately want to tell each other.

Touya to Keigo: birdie, pretty bird, songbird, little bird, (turtle) dove, angel, Kei. I have seen Altair used but not too often.

Keigo to Touya: ‘ouya, Tou. I saw Nova and nicks relating to stars but I never saw a lot of it.

All the normal stuff like dates they never were able to go before or were out of their reach before as normal life was denied to them, they went happily, having a date day every week. All those cheesy dates you see like apple picking dates, kayaking, you name it. They tried it because they wanted it.

It took Rumi - then dating and later marrying Fuyumi - time to warm up to Keigo who is vastly different from the hero mask he portrayed in the past. She had liked Hawks which Keigo made explicitly clear was a mask and not the real him. A lot of the heroes, Hawks' sidekicks, and Tokoyami took some time to adjust to who Keigo is after having Hawks since his debut. Keigo is an introverted quiet gentle introspective personality who listens thoughtfully with a lopsided true smile and hyena laughter who wants to help and really doesn't want to deal with the trappings of the hero life he hated before, making them realize that he truly did hate the life he led as Hawks. Part of the reason he fell so hard for Touya Todoroki was that he sees past the mask and seriously affected him and just wants Keigo as Keigo wants Touya. It took them a while to learn just how much he hated when he offhandedly mentioned Dabi back then declared he would’ve burned down the HPSC HQ for him as one of the most romantic things he ever said to him. I mean it shows them two things Hawks was fucked up to see an act of terrorism as a romantic gesture and Hawks hated his life back then.

Unlike Tokoyami and Jeanist who make a face upon seeing Touya and Keigo so affectionate initially (Hawks just won't stop visiting him to the point of having an equivalent of a conjugal visit post-war because Hawks went back to him! The guy who almost killed him and gave him the most brutal injuries he ever have! And he went back to him! To poor Tokoyami and Jeanist’s dismay.), Shouto took to it gladly since he was very supportive of it once he learned of TouKei's weird lovers status; he took Hawks' lie that he didn't know his brother at his time infiltrating rather well as he'd want his brother to be happy. Then again the honest conversation he later had with Hawks was eye-opening on Hawks’ interest in his brother. Hawks made it clear there was no honeypot scheme because flirting with Dabi never ever crossed his mind even as a part of his hero mask. Hawks said Dabi flirted with him first that took him off-guard which Touya corroborated; Hawks did admit trying to use the flirting charmer persona on Dabi but Dabi was never interested in that kind of flirting as he prefers Hawks giving him sassy and witty flirting, giving as much as he got and just won’t take shit from him kind of flirting. Sleeping with him and later being domestic with him that his love for Touya was something Keigo ever have for himself and learning to keep it.

Heck yeah, when they were Dabi and Hawks, they were fuckbuddies in a weird relationship, falling in love but using each other for their end goals. They are both Demi Homo and had casual sex before but stopped because all the talk of sex and booze and parties filling the void isn’t doing it for them which is all the better for them as they could concentrate on their goals. When these two met very much attracted to each other and have sex, it was holy shit because this was the sex they were told about. They are very sexual because there are few places they hadn’t had sex in Hawks’ old penthouse, Gunga Villa, and their home. Poor Natsuo who still knows his eldest brother well doesn’t want to know about his brother and his brother’s husband’s sex life even though he is far more likely to know. They’re the type of couple to have a few to several rounds of sex in one day.

While I don’t like mentioning Enji near my Dabihawks, his reaction to Hawks sleeping with Dabi and knowing him intimately than just the sex was spectacular, especially upon learning about their dates, elopement, and life together after the war or after they ran away together. The only two people who even visits him were Fuyumi and Shouto and the latter was sporadic at best. First, one of his coworkers married his son, then another married his ex-wife, and another married his daughter.

About Rumi x Fuyumi, they didn't meet until after the PLF war and before the start of the second one. At this point, Fuyumi has yet to know about Hawks' true relationship with her eldest brother; it wasn't until after the war or after her brother revealed that he had no plans to stay in Japan in the runaway scenario, that she and the family learned it. Though they are still happy nonetheless that Touya and Keigo found each other.

Unlike Touya and Keigo's spontaneous quiet elopement in which they invited nobody and an intimate vow renewal ceremony years later as both ceremonies are private, Rumi and Fuyumi have a proper wedding, which helped Rumi has the fortune to spend. It's on the semi-formal side as Rumi just dislikes formal stuff.

Okay, I'm digressing.

Enemies are enemies. Opposite sides. An attempted murder at the very least. Opposition with massive dislike or even hate, refusing to join the other. Hell, think Beatrice and Benedick who never got over each other yet don't like each other with all their verbal prowess and wit to snap back. Both sides have to be equal only if both sides have at least taken lives in the past or fought on equal footing.

Both Dabi and Hawks aren't entirely good people. They both had taken lives and had sins to atone for. Hawks is a government assassin who probably killed when he was 15 and in black ops when he hit his teens.

Similarly, Lelouch and Suzaku explicitly kill people. We see this onscreen! They explicitly want to make up for it in R2.

We know with the Port Mafia everything, Dazai and Chuuya killed.

I like my pairs of assholes. It's nothing unusual in the grand scheme of things when both sides preferably had done terrible things. Please Luffy had done terrible things by basically allowing the escape of criminals in Impel Down loose after his breakout. I love Luffy but I know that was just terrible.

Why can’t you see the eroticism of attempted murder and betrayal? It’s the point of enemies. A lot of my ships have this whether it was each other or someone close to them.

There has to be a power balance.

It's not just being terrible people. It could be using each other that helps level the playing field such as in the case of Dabihawks. Dabihawks shippers know they are using each other thus equaling the balance between them just as Dabihawks are in this weird relationship they can't name but are in love yet they are using each other. Hawks won't even deny it but Dabi would have to admit that he used Hawks too.

What tips the balance into actual abuse is what makes abuse, ya know. Not fighting back in any way is one such thing. The other cannot be a doormat just to bend over. There must be antagonism there at the very least.

Rivals are different. They aren’t trying to kill each other. Sabotaging each other or cheating is likely from those on the side who want to do that. They want the honor of having that prize. They’re aiming for that accolade. At best, it’s respect even begrudgingly.

Rivals that do try to kill will cross that line into enemies.

See the difference.

Enemies should be on opposite sides with their different ideologies. With understanding and empathy, they could either reach a compromise or something to achieve a happy ending. Enemies should at the very least attempt to kill the other if that’s a viable option.

However, there’s a difference between that and enemies-to-lovers ships that just isn’t possible. Like, hey, there’s this white conservative man and indigenous progressive woman who is depicted as such. There’s no way that’s possible unless it took the white man to admit fault because there’s no compromise here. It’s one thing about state policy but about the -isms about the world that is where they won’t compromise.

Just I saw that and I was WTF because there is no way. Seriously, Stede x Ed has a better chance as the series actively examines the layers in which their race, class, and queer experiences impact the relationship. That other relationship needs more than romcom good feels. Stede x Ed is a romcom but we see that actual movie irk is still needed. Just as Mary and Stede were able to reach an understanding so can Ed and Stede.

Just that there are enemies that won’t compromise. Dabihawks can compromise as they are foils and can reach an understanding. That other het ship is unlikely to happen.

Just to be clear, when -isms are at play and the conservative side refused to see their wrongdoings and privileges, then it’ll get ugly. This is more than just people breaking up relationships with anyone over political views. If you are being an ass to these people who just want to be treated as an equal and have enough of your privileged bs and calling you out for it, then you are an ass. If you are being an asshole in general with no provocation and refused to have basic human decency, then you are an asshole. Instead of looking inwardly, these guys would pretend the issue is ludicrous and avoid accountability by saying the opposite is too sensitive and talk smack as soon as their backs turn. They would be happy to say not all whites and not all men when exactly they have privileges. Using one privilege is better than admitting no wrong.

Honestly, speaking of heterosexual enemies-to-lovers, it's still far more accepted. Not me, I don't want heterosexuality in these kinds of ships.

Yet it's still relatively more accepted.

While ships as a whole had been lampooned, heterosexual ships escaped the scrutiny the homosexual ships did. Even Allurance fared better despite the terrible writing. Even canon pairings in shows like SVTFOE are still better received even when they are lambasted for bad writing.

Honestly in those situations, people complained about how ships ruined the writing as the romance plot tumor. They are still heterosexual ships so unlike the queer ships that got explicit art, they aren’t lampooned or tried to make as clean as possible. It’s the homosexual ships with explicit art that is the target.

Seriously, Dabihawks had it existed around the time of Suzalulu people won't even blink. Now, people argue against it because it's now 'toxic' which is laughable, people are unable to get past the enemies part when they clearly did for Reylo, and the purity bs.

I'm not all enemies-to-lovers, particularly if it's heterosexual. I wasn't interested in Reylo especially when I'm far more concerned about the entire whole trilogy and every part that is just going wrong.

Darklina is still fucking accepted when it's obvious it's a grooming situation! Reylo is accepted because it's fucking heterosexual!

These are enemies-to-lovers ships that are generally accepted and fared better than Dabihawks and Akeshu. Apparently, in the latter two, people are unable to get past the enemies.

All I ask is would they accept enemies-to-lovers if it's heterosexual? Or is it shipping that is the problem?

Because nobody argued against Reylo outside of being a ship from what I have seen. I have hardly seen enemies or even fucking purity be put forward because apparently, Rey is a girl boss and Ben is a traumatized white boy.

Because queer enemies-to-lovers ships are far more toxic than heterosexual enemies-to-lovers ships. Because all queer enemies-to-lovers are toxic over Darklina and Reylo.

Enemies are all about ideologies, compromises, and physical altercations that inevitably will hurt each other.

Listen, there is a major difference between Dabihawks and Harringrove. Dabihawks are foils and can help each other as we can see the other foils are also doing. Harringrove and perhaps even Steddie began as enemies. However, Harringrove, while having foils as well as Billy foils Jonathon as well, had one major difference: understanding as in knowing each other so well that they could know themselves more and making each other happy and better. Billy cares not to understand his foil outside of lusting after him. He cares not to understand Lucas or anybody in Steve's circle when Steve cares so much for his kids and it was Max who threatened him and he actually kept his damn promise. Really, it seemed like Billy avoided Steve and the kids after the events of S2 and they returned the favor by trying hard to ignore his existence. He made no effort to understand nor change himself for the better except keep at a distance.

Steddie, wow, we can see the change in the interactions we do get to see and the implications. King Steve and the Freak never interacted but heard about each other, regardless of their misconceptions blocked out potential. Though Robin and Dustin definitely acted as buffers, if they interacted before, it would be icy as Steve wouldn’t take to understanding the socioeconomic statuses he took for granted. Steve unfortunately knew more about classism now than his ex-girlfriend.

Yeah, I am not letting go that Nancy insulted Jonathan with the Oliver comment. Wow, way to make the endgame couple so poorly handled. It’s not even the first case the Duffers handled romance incorrectly as we do see Jopper with the crazy lady by Hopper after the S1 comment. No improvised kiss was enough to get that taste out of my mouth despite knowing Jopper is an endgame.

In the scenes we do see, there are a lot of positive emotions as we see Steve reassure Eddie and Eddie assuring him back and in their final scene together, Steve worried for them both and trusts Eddie with Dustin’s safety. Their views of each other were destroyed and Steve was just as protective of Eddie as Eddie was in awe of him.

This is what I mean by understanding each other and making each other happy and their best.

For the love of Godoka, any antis trying to say the fucking obvious ‘they hate each other, why ship them’, fuck you and your self-righteous ass. You are helping nobody, neither the shippers nor yourselves.

Shipping is fun, not activism, you dumb idiots. Let ships be ships and don’t try to dissuade.

I already said my piece about EndHawks and I refuse to touch their grounds. You do not see me invading EndHawks spaces to say that they shouldn’t be shipped even though I do think their existence is a horrid ship. Trying to invade these ships and say the fucking obvious as if you can’t use your imagination other than whatever it is and try to imply the ship is bad because you’re unable to get past enemies… I have seen this so many times in Dabihawks with the antis invading the spaces that it’s just annoying.

The antis are annoying and add nothing to the conversation. At least in Dabihawks spaces, I don’t see a lot of Dabihawksers invading other ship bases to prove a point. If anything, the Dabihawks antis want to prove a point while the shippers just want to be left alone.

Just leave us alone.

I have seen antis invade spaces where they aren’t welcomed simply because they want to be right. In spaces where people want to have fun.

Shipping is fun. Antis invading ship spaces of ships they don’t see or hate is just annoying and prove nothing but their lack of imagination and trying to be right in a fandom where fun is the point.

I have been in fandoms for nearly two decades. What antis say means nothing in the face of my fandom experience. What they say means nothing.

Enemies are not rivals. It’s not the same.

Rivals. It’s obvious what rivals differentiate from enemies. Rivals are in the same field aiming for the same goal.

That’s so easy.

Rivals are Contestshipping, Appealshipping, Comashipping, and Palletshipping to name a few. Those are rivals even argumentative ones but don’t hurt each other the way enemies do. Sure they’ll use cheats but they won’t kill the other.

Why is this so hard to understand?

The most famous rivals to lovers ships are from Ace Attorney, Narumitsu and Klapollo. Narumitsu has gotten chance childhood friends thrown in there.

Seriously, those two pairs aren’t trying to kill each other. Teasing each other yes but no death.

Really, Jessie’s initial cheating, Harley’s sabotage, and Paul’s hardness are rival behavior. Fuck, Edgeworth and the von Karmas’ intimidation are rival behaviors than the actual attempted murders on the part of Dabihawks and Shizaya. Those guys are actively trying to kill or ruin the other.

It’s not the same.

People seem to lean more on the rivals side of things in the ongoing war against any critical thinking or are unable to look past enemies.

Enemies won’t be looking to a tea party and picnic. Well unless they want to poison them or try to threaten them somewhere they have power.

At least with rivals, we get to see those begrudging outings. Fuck, we see Harley with his rivals when we do get to see the Hoenn coordinators.

Rivals that cross into enemies are trying to actively kill each other at best.

Why is it so hard to comprehend the difference?

Of course, it comes down to antishipping vs proshipping, shipping wars with new paint, and just as annoying. I refused to take sides on a nonsensical war that just has new paint on it.

I agree misogyny has a large part in popular mxm shipping and queer ships but that’s another nuanced conversation about the overall genre in relation to women, both real life and fictional. Fuck, I have seen inoffensive ships twisted into pretzels because a character seemed ‘minor-coded’. I won’t discuss it here because it’s tiring when I keep giving the same advice and I’m not the best person to discuss that even though I read queer and shounenai.

I’m basically an oldie in fandom. I know how to curate and how to ship without going into all that nonsense. No, I won’t make a post discussing that when it’s just so stupid.

Ratatouille the Musical, Bridgerton the Musical, Fanworks, and the Law

So about the Bridgerton lawsuit…

First, I don’t hate Bridgerton. I like the music though it’s effectively pop songs in classical form. I like romance but don’t know if it’s right for me. I don’t mind escapist romance as I can tell you what escapist romance I do like.

I like musicals though that’s a result of growing up with Disney.

To understand how the Bridgerton musical started, we must go back to the Ratatouille musical trend that lasted half a year or so.

The Ratatouille musical started off as a joke but became a sincere tongue-in-cheek creative trend from the amateur to the pros. Just to be clear, it felt like once the pros and those in training got a hold of it, that’s when it became a Diamond in the rough.

The Seaview production has to combine an ultimately disjointed mess of ideas into a coherent story. That means having the apparent I want song that wasn't even written by Tiktokers and writing coherency all around basically. Not every piece will be selected as I'm pretty sure behind the scenes this happens. We just don't know what songs were cut.

At the end of the day, the Ratatouille Tiktok is a creative outlet that somehow provides only the ideas that had talented performers throw their hats in the ring spread by influential people in the industry.

With Bridgerton the musical, however, Bear and Barlow made an even more basic musical than Ratatouille. At least that came from a homegrown community. This album is nothing more than Bear and Barlow trying to get validation and independence despite being rich girls.

It's really bad just knowing they appropriated a gay man's words for a white straight girl's albeit interracial relationship. They missed the metaphor so badly that I wanted nothing more than to strangle their album's existence just for that. The LGBT has so much oppression and while Bridgerton is an escapist fantasy yet still only has two queer men with small exploration but not enough to explore and have more queer characters in the mix, to see white straight women appropriate the gay text is alarming and tone-deaf.

With Netflix dropping the case, it seems fandom can return to normal. Fans and small creators can breathe a sigh of relief.

Because what Bear and Barlow had done was create more pressure on fanworks.

Fanfiction had always been censored and had lawsuits put upon them. Anne Rice is the most infamous example. X-Files and Anne McCaffrey are fiascos on their own too. Fuck, fanfiction in the days of Star Trek and the rise of Spirk can only be read in zines. Lucasfilm even sent out a cease-and-desist for Star Wars slash zines! Disclaimers are so routine that not needing them on AO3 was a gift for fans by fans though it's still a habit.

Bear and Barlow’s recklessness put any fan creator at so much risk after what fans have to do just to have peace in making fanworks that admittedly the achievement had lulled a false sense of security in the creation of fanworks Bear and Barlow was not willing to toe the line for their own benefit. What about the tiny creator on TikTok making Steddie videos? They don’t have any lawyer who can help them at all in the lawsuit that will destroy them.

This is why AO3 is so important because it’s run by fans for fans, the money also goes to the lawyers needed though a well-known board member on AO3 outright said the IP lawyers are fans who donate money as well and do the lawyering pro bono. On an aside note, the server had been going down in intervals by the time I was writing this but just to be clear, the beta is there and it’s maintained.

Hence after what I heard about this lawsuit, I have no sympathy for them. They seemed to be expecting support as an independent creator but when Netflix was the reasonable one here, they lost goodwill.

Stealing from female creators here is a huge red flag, particularly from two white straight women from a black woman. Shonda Rhimes and Julia Quinn spoke up about their disappointment in Bear and Barlow after the initial support.

Bear and Barlow had doors shut on them, fandom goodwill lost, and their Grammy gathering dust as their only sign of validation. All these things about independence and all they show about themselves are egotism and entitlement. What they should've done was move on and create more but kept moving back to Bridgerton because that made them famous.

It’s disappointing that it ended up that way. I don’t enjoy Bridgerton as a romance even as an escapist fantasy for my romantic heart yet the Grammy no matter how much the other nominees or even others deserve it more was a step towards creators getting their songs made into theatre.

With Ratatouille showing a community banding together to create something albeit with some help from trained and talented people throwing their hats in the ring and Bridgerton's only contribution was the Grammy win, it's now Epic the musical to be brought onto the stage and showcased.

The soundtrack is released to critical acclaim and the people behind them are planning to put it on stage.

Epic has been followed since its inception. Unlike Bear and Barlow, the creator has graciousness, allowing the audience into the process. A three-year process, unlike Bear and Barlow who just don’t let other people unless it’s to participate in their monetary gain like Darren Criss.

I’m gonna be harsh to them, both as a queer person and a fandom ‘old’. They made mistakes but I don’t know if they can restore trust in the fandom again other fandoms have known just how destructive Bear and Barlow just had done and would’ve caused a major event in fandom history had the case not been dropped and drawn out excruciatingly.

TikTok has been used to scout talent for the musical theatre kids. No matter how basic their music is, it’s a diamond in the rough.

It has gotten to a point where people have front-row seats for the creation of a musical that had the potential to be staged. This is the future of musical theatre.

TikTok has its highs and lows. There is no denying that after Ratatouille, scouts and professionals have been looking at the site.

I’m not a fan of TikTok nor do I wish to become an influencer. I can see where these platforms can be used as stepping stones for professional spaces.

TikTok ARMYs have so much misinformation going around. Yeah, I don’t think I can fix that. The No Dynamic Pricing is another matter though.

For the musical theatre folk in New York’s Great White Way, TikTok was a godsend for seeking out budding talent.

Because while I don’t think musical theatre isn’t going anywhere and don’t need Hollywood validation, the lack of innovation is deafening. LMM is the only innovation we got so far for musicals. There are more jukeboxes though there are originals like Some Like It Hot

Heck, even Epic is based on Odyssey similar to Hadestown’s Orpheus and Eurydice. Well, Moulin Rouge was based on that myth too but the Broadway failed to keep the walking away so I don’t count the Broadway version to be an Orpheus and Eurydice in any way. The thing they went in forgoing that element led to one of the worst decisions the show had ever made and I’m glad that decision cemented the final score much more than one of the worst librettos and jukebox musicals I have seen yet.

I’m not even hammering that Broadway doesn’t have that much originality, just a lack of innovation to keep things fresh or do something new else it goes the way of opera where opera remained that instead of innovation.

Again the movie musicals need to be reinvigorated to the point that LMM shows what can be done and more than just literal interpretations or be in the hands of people who don’t get/embarrassed by musicals or people who should’ve understood musicals but failed right now (looking at you, Bill Condon). Even Baz Luhrmann tried to recreate though without the jukebox musical formula with his own movies.

We’re getting back to the triple threats at least from Wicked casting alongside TTB, WSS, and ITH. I just hope that Hugh Jackman actually has a better role in a movie musical because his last movie musical turnout though bolstered by his enthusiasm was dampened by the poor storytelling that really didn’t have anyone’s talent highlighted outside of isolation. TGS is more built as a guilty pleasure (definitely not mine to be clear). Still, at least Moulin Rouge the movie has a lot more to say about love with the central theme of Nature Boy’s last line (admittedly it’s one of my favorite songs combining both a sense of mysticism, storytelling, and sincerity hence why Singularity already with its jazz and atmosphere and Black Swan with both the usage of Swan Lake and the instinctive knowing the song is about creativity are why I latched on those BTS songs including Truth Untold whereas Stigma was definitely when I’m in the mood to lament my closeted self though Wings is the album if I’m in the sad queer woman state. V’s music taste is far up my alley than say Jungkook’s) than what TGS has to say about anything really.

TGS has a leggier run just as much as MR had in the theaters. TGS doesn't really offer much outside of superficial talking points about othering and musical numbers that are definitely written independently from the plot that had been rewritten and passed over many hands since. MR has a singular vision of a melodramatic love story that is shamelessly self-aware of itself and leaned into the melodrama.

Antis had yet to make a peek at why the pop media landscape can do everything not original. Sure there are complaints of cliche outside of the nostalgia bait but that’s as far as unoriginal it takes. There's the remakes going on but largely it's more of the same but with safer choices for money for these studios and executives. They won't take chances and even if they did, it would be a surprise hit or an underrated gem. However, while people made it clear it's tiring to see remakes of perfectly fine adaptations and want adaptations of those that didn't have a chance in the spotlight, it's a combo of nostalgia and safer options for money that is the way it is. At least, for this, it's for franchises and nostalgia that people see as a problem especially when they do gain money and not every actor and actress can be the superstar seen decades prior. Not even the Rock even when he did bring in millions wasn't exactly a superstar Leonardo DiCaprio was in the 90s.

Yet when fanfics do it, they are lambasted just for not only being fanfics but also doing things to media with all the fix-its, AUs, and happily ever afters.

It's not as if anything funded in pop culture isn't anything fanfiction had done and more. The difference is that it is capitalism. That one has to make money out of creativity and doing creative work on others' creative work isn't doing anything creative. It has to be capitalized on for money and for the antis' sense of moral superiority.

Because that's the thing, isn't it? Fans' will to create is enormous and a space where no lawsuits and censorship reign supreme as it does everywhere. Godoka, you know, how happy I was to see not a single 'unalive' in AO3.

These antis don't give a shit about making real reforms. They think they see child pornography on AO3 when it's not. It does not feature real children having sex as much as it featured fictional underage sex. All they care about is their moral superior authority for they think they are the arbiter of all things best shown to them and the world when all they have done is follow in the world's footsteps of before and step down on unadulterated creativity. They'd rather waste time for authorities about AO3 than actually do something beneficial regarding actual children getting hurt rather than fictional kids.

So it's a-okay to have & Juliet, West Side Story, 10 Things I Hate About You, and original Shakespeare plays take place not just in their original location but anywhere it can like say after a war of any kind like WW1 but fanfics can't make a happier AU or fix-it when there are fucking Shakespeare adaptations that fucking saved Juliet and even Romeo?! Shakespeare can't place in the modern day when they clearly can as be seen with the modern adaptations and with Baz Luhrmann's 90s mafia take while still retaining the dialogue and stage directions.

These guys truly don't give a shit about why fanfiction matters and have such a punk-like attitude to media they like, caring about wanting happiness and all the shipping.

Is it that much different from adapting Shakespeare and the Elseworlds and What-ifs that are in popular media?

It isn't. Except fanfiction isn't barred from mainstream constraints from depicting queerness.

Fandom does have its problems with -isms that are ever so present but there is no denying the creativity that was drawn up.

The shipping also gets intersected with this as the purity factor invaded shipping. Please I loathed one ship in particular when my nearly two decades of experience I never hated a ship ever until that ship so yeah. I don't give a shit about proshipping and antishipping which is just pure nonsense. I'm an adult who knows to avoid ships I don't like and am unbothered about the hate poured onto my kind of ships. I'll take shipping wars over absurdity about what kind of ships I should ship just because it makes me seem better as a person.

Antis truly have a problem with fanfiction and AO3 due to their misguided sense of moral superiority when all they are doing is just puritanical moral guardians espousing things that had already been said to normal media which can't depict anything without getting backlash whereas fanfiction, the smallest target they could possibly get, they see as an easy target.

And the fact they easily utilized the law against fanworks just so they can feel good about themselves. I wonder how they feel about how Bear and Barlow's debacle impacts fanworks should the case go forward in any possible way. Joy because it meant all fanworks are impacted therefore censorship and all the things they want can be used to stifle any creativity.

Fanworks have to be protected because, in the past, companies and creators shut them down, primarily aimed at queer works made by women. Instead of taking them down via lawsuits and cease-and-desists before, they are using their pop culture media to attack these fans because seemingly these fans invalidate their worthiness to their male audience, peers, and superiors. Again, I haven’t heard of any major lawsuits until the Bear and Barlow case which knowing fandom history could have many repercussions.

Yeah, thanks for thinking women including women over thirty, teenage girls, queer, BIPOC, and marginalized women invalidate worthiness.

If it were not for the women, then they wouldn't have anything at all. This is why when creators actually acknowledged its female base, it's all the more relieving that they understand that even when they clearly believe the entirety of the fandom is toxic rather than different bases of people interacting.

Female fans are trivialized whereas male fans for better or worse acknowledged as either geeks/nerds who are often gatekeepers. I still don't know much about Gamergate and still don't know how to find reliable info on it that isn't propaganda.

Still, fanworks written by women are not well-regarded primarily because the superstructure and what is popularized came from women. Slash zines are by women for women.

Anti-fujoshi eventually circled to anti-M/M, which is annoying to see.

I mean there are already many of the -isms in fandoms too but outside fandoms, women and shippers are often the targets of derision.

In fact, all the more people don't understand just how fandoms have been pushed forward by the women and the activities, the more they see it to snuff it out because canon is so much better.

I mean there is a thing between canon and fanon. However, when the fanon is so pervasive, the canon might have more to say while the fanon can still have to know what the canon is saying coupled with the fix-its and happily-ever-afters.

Because of how much fandoms thrived on using what they love to tell stories they want to explore and more, the creators often see it as either hitting the bottom line, thinking fans failed to understand anything, or seeing it as outright stealing.

While IP laws are there for a reason, there is really no need to attack fans just to create something from something they love. Yes, it's thievery in a sense but there is no denying that fans are the ones who are building a community around what the creation had done.

Bear and Barlow's case shows that the line between the law and the law does not protect the fanwork. What we have now is the enthusiasm that produces many to the point that the creators directly interact with the fans in some way or another.

However, it must not be monetized unless it's public domain lest it hits the bottom line. Not that Potterheads are disappointed in JKR who want merch and are all but making their own and commissioning. Hey, it's better to supply fans with money rather than let a miserable woman who is unfortunately too powerful as being around her stuff inevitably.

As of now, while creators are willing to interact with fans and give them leeway now to make all the fanworks, it's still a tenuous process to even get there and even then, just as the Bear and Barlow case reveals, still have the tendency to destroy others through others' recklessness.

Algorithms, AO3, and Fanfic Recs (and Censorship)

I don't think making fun of kids growing up on social media depends heavily on engagement and don't know how to search for what is good for them without others' help.

Now, I think fic recs are dearly needed in this climate. I'm still looking for Heartstopper fic recs posts for some time now as I recently got some good Legolas x Gimli fics recently and I'm currently reading this long fic.

Fic recs are so good for me. An easy fic recs for me was to look at the bookmarks sections should I like the author or to see their Tumblr.

That's why it's so easy for me to go searching for any fic recs posts on any media I'm currently into.

Yes, there are lots of stories out there.

Think of AO3, FF.Net, Livejournal, Spacebattles, and other fanfiction sites as libraries. Because that's what they are in the end. Libraries.

Summaries and tags are there for the most part.

Godoka, if kids of today think AO3 is hard to navigate, then imagine kinkmemes. You'll lucky to find a Delicious link page for everyone unless you are basically obsessively memorizing the page and section of a kinkmeme. Kinkmemes are like Jenga where these prompts are hopefully or not answered.

Alongside FF.Net, I still search for fics on Livejournal and now Spacebattles.

I'm not a social media person. Even now, as an ARMY, I mostly use my Tumblr.

I'm so used to searching for fics that AO3 was an easy transition.

AO3 doesn’t need engagement.

Most fanfic writers I have seen don’t care much about engagement, just wanting to tell a story. While kudos and comments are nice, it’s something that is just isolated within the fic itself.

Fandom in itself had been severely affected by the ‘content’ of the social media landscape. We’re basically The Menu the fandom experience of creativity and community. The fandom shared a love for whatever pop culture and the little subset of fans of a fanbase just bounce off each other for a particular ship or piece of media that was released slowly. Now binging and quick bites of content reduced art and community. And it went as far as affecting fandom.

All fandom is a shared love for something. That’s why the algorithm for AO3 is antithetical to fandom.

Fans shouldn’t be forced to create piece after piece just to maintain relevance in a fandom. They’re not creating but pumping out for approval. What fans want to share is a love for something. Something as simple as a ‘that’s so good!’ is enough of an encouragement as opposed to pumping out products like a machine.

The point is a never-ending fandom because that’s the point. Not because there’s nothing left to be released does not mean that fans cannot still create. It’s steady and fun, not stressful. Somehow it’s consumerism rather than personal entertainment and community bonding through a common interest.

It doesn't mean that fandom can't adapt to the new environment but when people are casually dropping series after it ends and no content is coming out of fandoms to the point it's called a dead fandom just for the series not having anything new coming out of it after it ended. There's a difference between a rarepair / minor fandom that didn't garner the fans to create and dropping after the series ended and not even thinking of making what happens in the potential. Really, I'm not even in the Genshin Impact and MHA fandoms right now but even I check them at odd times alongside Code Geass, Haikyuu, Daiya no Ace, and Durarara fics. For fuck's sake, Katekyo Hitman Reborn is still going strong to this day.

What fandom usually does is gather after and in between episode/chapter releases to socialize, theorize, and create.

Heck, even companies starting to release in pieces rather than the whole thing even Netflix does it by chopping up seasons for example. Though that might force making the finales even worse just to make it feel like a season finale.

Fuck, you can use the top comments or kudos section on the AO3 as fanfic recommendations. Yes, the diamonds in the rough in the lesser-reviewed fics won’t be seen but the point is still there.

If you like a particular author’s story, check out their other works, their bookmarks, and their gifted works in that order. If you notice in my AO3 bookmarks, I have several fics from several authors in multiple fandoms. I’m picky about what I like so it’s the ones I like best that are in my bookmarks while others from the same authors I just appreciate but no dice.

Kids, please understand that I’m trying to help you. While I wasn’t there for the debacles of Livejournal as I was in 6th to 7th grade at the point aka I was just starting to explore fandom outside my books, I was there for the Tumblr fiasco. I know my fandom history as it’s interesting to learn.

Please learn fandom history and it’s easy to search: read the summary, check the tags, use the filters, and use the search engine. If you like a particular story, check the author and if they have bookmarks, check their bookmarks because if you like the content of what they like, then what they read is similar.

Go find fic recs. TVTropes has one alongside having a fanworks page if found. Ask for fic recs on Tumblr or anywhere that is fan-related really.

Learn why fans were frustrated with the loss of Tumblr's NSFW and now Twitter's with only logins to even see the NSFW and even then fans still go to other sites so they can publish their NSFW. Why AO3 is considered the last bastion of creativity that allows so many things to be told.

It’s an archive, a library with warning tags.

Do they walk into a library or a bookstore expecting an algorithm and warning labels? I don't think books have trigger warnings at all.

The books I want to read don't have warnings on them for certain.

I have seen a warning on Witch Hat Atelier tankoban about that sexual harassment chapter but I don't think it's an overall thing I have seen so far.

I know this because books are still the love of my life. I have a backlog of books as well as an entire history in my AO3.

AO3 basically asked you with the yellow banner that it’s content for adults and if you are ready to read it again. Because it is your decision at the end of the day, even with the fic in question having all the tags and warnings on it complete with the summary.

You curate your own experience. Complaining and deliberately seeking out material you aren’t supposed to read is just you throwing a tantrum.

All those fics have a place to exist alongside the best fics. You don’t get to decide what kind of fics to even exist.

AO3 has been called the last bastion of creativity for a reason.

Do not think for a second you are special just because you think you know shit.

All you are showing about yourself is a spoiled brat who thinks they know better than the older women who literally built the superstructure of the fandom itself.

Why is it so hard to ask for fanfiction recommendations?

Fanfiction recommendations are a thing that should still occur. Not only older fanfiction is getting harder to find, but their presence is also nil compared to the recent work.

An archive is an archive. With a functioning tagging system, it is used the filter and search the designated fanfiction. However, it will take longer aside from just knowing the basics.

It’s an archive. An archive dedicated to saving fics from defunct sites because have they ever experienced just how many fics are lost from so many sites and just how many fanfics had been impacted by lawsuits even during the time when they just started to circulate as zines? An archive for the saving of fandom history that has been lost or could have been lost.

Do you know how important that all art that is just used to create not be sold in capitalist institutions that are for the rich to see and discard how they want to see, disregarding the creativity and the hurdles that marginalized groups don’t have a chance in displaying their work due to the so-called style or have access or people doing what they love but no one appreciates it at the time or the drive to just create and not monetize? For historians, the voices of the ordinary are literal gold. I’m not a historian but Godoka, seeing historical ordinary voices, outside of the rich, educated, or well-known, are fascinating.

There are professional official archives for anything that are archived by people with advanced degrees who are paid to be there. AO3 is no different. It’s an archive of creativity from ordinary people who made no profit from basically doing regular fandom activity. Even something as the author’s note with the mundane or crazy life mentions is so significant to a glimpse of life out there. AO3 is the Library of Alexandria.

Do not let anyone think otherwise because they bought into capitalism and the fact that not everything is for them and not everything is about them.

Fanfiction is important because of the creativity, happiness, and community that can help people feel and get through the day. All fanworks are!

Fuck the elitist bs! All art is important even if these antis cannot see shit from their elitist puritanical bs.

Because on top of this, they display appalling misogyny, seeing only white women as the only ones who ever use AO3 and that women’s hobbies especially those over thirty are lesser and what they and their moral authority declared what women should be doing instead. Wow, not even thinking about intersectionality there! No women from the LGBT and WOC while saying that white feminism trumped everything while degrading white women at the same time!

The History, Marked For Later, and Bookmarks are frequently used. I personally used the Bookmarks as the FF.Net Favorites equivalent and what made it better was the private as well as the Rec heart. Depending on my fanfiction, you can find the Rec heart prioritized over the normal bookmarks.

While I would like to filter the History too, there is only so much I could do to find what fics I was reading for.

AO3 is still in beta and still has lots of work to do. I mean there were periods where the fics I read didn't make on time to the History page until days later as a result of the problems with the server.

I don't want an AO3 Wrapped or an algorithm. My current reading history is between me and whatever higher being.

I will be redoing fanfic recs after so long. First up are Pokemon AUs and crossovers!

I can’t believe we got to the point of pro-censorship people climbing the ranks on OTW. It’s just sad to see the younger generation puritanical in ways that show they are too in the healthy ships.

*snorts* Given the NSFW romanticism of daddy issues that is so prevalent in EndHawks, I doubt the younger generation isn’t any less shy. Just selective oblivious.

I don’t give a shit about EndHawks shippers and refuse to set foot on their grounds; seeing fanart gives me psychic damage because I can skip fanfiction about them but fanart is still art. I don’t want anything to do with that ship after seeing the implications and what it would mean for the characters, especially Hawks.

Anyways, it’s clear that the younger generation is puritanical to horrifying degrees.

Yes, you can tell stories without resorting to offensive shit. However, said offensive shit can provide good writing if you know how to write it tactfully.

This tactfulness doesn’t seem to register. No exploration in their land. Apparently, after dealing with terrible execution, these things must never be discussed or be put in black and white.

Because even when people want villains of the sympathetic and redeemable, somehow the irredeemable and just bad are wanted yet seen as uninteresting. People want bad for evil’s sake but it depends on how the character is written.

I mean Puss in Boots The Last Wish showcased the villains in different lights and well-regarded.

What these guys up their ass about censorship showed is a lack of creativity and critical thinking. The point of a villain is usually the kill because that’s what a villain does.

Censorship is bad. They want no creativity and critical thinking that had been so prominent in literacy. As a book enthusiast, that is a big no to these guys who want censorship even more on fandom grounds.

They are showing they know nothing of fandom history as all they want is to be pure despite people telling them it’s their own job to curate and just look at the damn tags.

They aren’t doing anything worthwhile with their tantrums and crusades. They showed ignorance and a lack of common sense.

The internet ain’t their babysitter. When regular YouTube is better for kids than actual YouTube Kids, then that says everything. And let’s not get into censoring words. That in itself is horrifying and showed an unwillingness to discuss. I refused to be censored so I’m happy to use them freely than be forced by this domino effect of censorship that began in TikTok. Horribly dystopian and offered nothing but a lack of human discussion regarding the human experience that is needed in a society that already refused to discuss these topics in a healthy way.

Using words like unalive to censor basic human experiences like death, sex, and even terms for oppressed minorities is horrifyingly dystopian just because advertisers and corporations demand it. Young people and grown adults see it as normal and getting used to not talking about any of those topics without going around censors is a problem. It’s unsettling hence my refusal to bend down to those censors.

Censorship is just bad. No matter what, history had shown how much it stifled in the name of morality even though all those people showed nothing but ignorance.

Looking at you, Mary Whitehouse. Yeah, these Puritans of today in fandom spaces are Mary Whitehouse of fandom. If people who fight stupidly against ships existing instead of ignoring and letting others have their fun are foolish, these guys are idiots against all types of fun and imagination.

I’m not a big horror fan but even I am aware that the horror classics should be appreciated. On an aside note, horror movies should be nominated and appreciated by the so-called superior film award shows that just go after biopics which is already dubious enough. You won’t see me watching a horror flick alone or with anybody but I understand the classics.

I mean I'm moreover a romance genre fan than a horror fan. Please when romcoms had been denigrated and seen as fluff than anything of substance. Still popular so much that queer filmmakers are trying their hands at it as queer characters can lead a rom-com. I mean the last rom-com I heard was Fire Island, the queer Asian cast Pride and Prejudice romcom. Bros are the mainstream romcom that people are supposed to know when I wish people look at Fire Island instead.

Anyways, censorship is not good for lack of better words. Nobody should censor creativity in fandom spaces just for these guys' so-called morality and moral panic. They don't seem to understand basic exploration and tactfulness on top of it.

All I just want for them is to not throw spoiled tantrums and expect the internet to clean up that mess. With Elsagate's ominous return and many veterans and actual mature adults pointing out that even AO3 asked one last time if you seriously want to read something that only adults should see, then I'm wondering just how far they'll go just for their puritanical censorship.

Fanworks with all the disclaimers are essentially theft. There was no need to add disclaimers on AO3 though.

Fans particularly queer fans stole them and basically have a field day with them. It’s basically about certain fanbases, the shipping is about the dynamics in relation to the media and personal preference. Ship wars are about arguing who is the better match which is not as fun to witness as simply ignoring and reading. Ignoring ships that you don’t like instead of invading other ships’ spaces is better than seemingly doing your best to be superior in any way possible.

This is literally no different from the public domain and the various mythologies we got of Western superheroes. There are official fix-its in comic book canon as well as what-ifs. Just because fans don’t profit from it does not negate that it’s a creative art in a community devoted to it. Just because women from all walks of life see it as a hobby does not negate the very idea of fandom. The significant difference was that commercialization and capitalism separate from fans' will to create.

Without women being the first to push Star Trek and the Beatles, the men really wouldn't have taken a second glance at it. And even then it's the men who so-called legitimatize them (to the point the Beatles changed their look to appeal more to the male demographic whereas BTS attempted no changes and was always grateful to ARMYs for the opportunities) when female interests are often trashed. Pop culture media like Supernatural and Sherlock owed much of their popularity to women and these shows returned the favor by belittling these women including the shipping tendencies.

And apparently, women’s hobbies relating to fandoms are even more denigrated. Women over thirty shouldn’t be participating in fandoms but instead, be spinsters according to these people.

When older women are the reason for the superstructure that is the fandom in the first place. Zines? Women.

Fandom is supposed to be fun with many fires going on behind.

The whole thing with the puritanical tyranny going on with Gen Z is annoying and shows a lack of fandom history and lack of common sense and media literacy. All they want is to be ‘good’ in the eyes of the society that is demanding better rep for BIPOC and queer people. What they don’t seem to understand is the nuances of proper tactful exploration.

Fandom is supposed to have fun with canon more or less being prompted for imagination. Whatever implications or whatever extrapolated from teeny tiny interactions or none at all is what is supposed to happen in fandom to have fun. Canon just provides the basics but does not mean that in itself the end-all-be-all that I see nowadays.

Fanfics Preferences

Just a fun post.

Plotty fics have to be interesting. Summaries have to be interesting.

However, if it was an exciting summary yet it has closely spaced everything, then I won’t read it. I can only read that format on books and ebooks. I just can’t read it on fanfiction. It’s just annoying.

Likewise with large paragraphs but paragraphs that gave nothing to structure or were just not easily seen. Paragraphs that just trail instead of focusing on the intent of the paragraph. That is also a strike for me to not continue.

Fanfiction has to be spaced apart for me to read and enjoy.

If not that, then it's the punctuation and spelling mistakes. I for the life of me can barely read when everything is in lowercase than having proper structure. I could barely read Chris Chan's tweets, the lowercase on everything as opposed to her capitalizing every word is not that much better.

Sometimes, it takes me a while to get to reading some of the more popular fics and even then sometimes it just isn’t to my liking. And that’s okay.

Believe me when I say that these were potentially good fics that could’ve entered my lists of either Marked For Later or Bookmarks but as the story goes on, my enthusiasm dulled and it just never hit the high the fics once gave me.

This isn’t the case for fics I'm watching in those lists and everywhere else. And even then I need to check though Spacebattles has a better record for me to check. Spacebattles only have that luxury because it’s a forum site and forum fanfiction is a need to keep track of it. Archives are that and therefore much easier to track.

Legit, I was resigning myself to a Spirk fic never updated until it was updated out of nowhere hence never checking past the one and a half pages. I was so happy.

As of current, my interest in MHA and Genshin is shot. The only MHA fics I’m only bothering are the Dabihawks Bachelor franchise fic series while the only Genshin fics I’m reading are the Zhongchi transmigration fic series. Even then, it’s because I’m interested in that while the other fics are there for updates. Seriously, for one fic, I’m basically having a less of a second glimpse of a hopeful one uptick of a number. I’m not even going to read it at this point because I’m busy in another fandom but I just to see it go up one number. Largely, my Marked For Later is basically that. I haven’t read more than 90% of the four-page Marked For Later since forever or since it last updated. The other percentage is because I’m interested in the meantime. Technically, being in my Marked For Later is a good thing since there is a chance of Bookmarks but even then one fic managed to not make it into my Bookmarks, only in Marked For Later because there had been critical hits to its score to get into it because unlike This Bites and the flaws with that one, it’s still better as it understands the themes of a certain arc while that fic lost so many points for one scene that is just so bad that there’s no chance in hell it’s gonna be in my Bookmarks.

Hence my surprise to see the Spirk fic update.

I like the details. The more details and exploration, the more I like it. I just like things that build the world around them. My fave fics either have concise details and proper exploration with sometimes the former having lots up to paragraphs.

As an example, a Stranger Things Steddie slow-burn fic I'm reading has so much detail about the characters, development, and worldbuilding of a realistic 80s small-town Americana Hawkins. It's so good to see so much development and details that I knew that this is the Eddie involved since the beginning fic I was looking for so long. We're not even close to the Steddie endgame here but we so far got a gay Eddie in denial about his crush if he's aware of it for the true and growing Steve who does not see Eddie as a potential love interest yet as he's still dating Nancy as of the current timeline. The themes of class, growth, connection, and authority are just so good. It's gonna take a good four years for them to become a couple.

The fewer details and it certainly won’t do.

Worldbuilding or just adding enough detail around like headcanons of a life made by the characters is enough to draw me in. That makes me stay more than I can say than a story that doesn’t have anything to build off of in my head. I need to visualize it; there are initial visuals just because I’m already attached to the characters but I need more to see the scene.

Reading books takes the worldbuilding because fics get a pass of at least the attachment but need more depending on what I’m reading. Getting into my bookmarks and Marked For Later is hard with this requirement because sometimes some fics just don’t tick.

Introspection is a big plus for me.

If it’s done well, an unreliable narrator is a great thing to use.

I don't like darkness for dark's sake with no levity. I can read them but it’s more self-contained than being the overarching narrative where there is no levity. The dark fics you see in my AO3 bookmarks are quite dark but it's a dark that serves a purpose. Same thing with angst and hurt but it needs the other to balance or just the right amount of examination for it to work. I don’t always want needlessly dark tragedies. I understand their place but I just need the other side.

Please I wouldn’t like the Soukoku “Love” series made by dgalerab if it weren’t for the fact the couple is trying and the love that shines through these assholes. It’s dark yet the dark served a purpose.

My preferred ships are those with so many complications that its wonders fanfic writers managed to work. If there isn't pain in the ship, then why am I here?

Narrative foils with so many complications are preferable.

Not that it’s unusual. Foils are primarily the popular ships. Again, just look at my previous post about shipping in general.

Honestly for a fic to even get past the History page and into the Mark For Later page, there’s a threshold depending. Sometimes it depends on other fics the author has or there just aren’t enough details to pass currently.

I’m very hard to impress.

It took This Bites until the penultimate chapter to finally be in my bookmarks. It’s good but it took that long.

I can trust Love_Psycho as I can easily bookmark her Icarus series when I read it even without the R2 section.

I haven’t seen other outings or if the fic does pass the threshold itself. I won’t bookmark willy-nilly. I just need to see more.

More writing be it other fics or future chapters is required so that I can accurately know. Sometimes it takes a series or if there's a WIP that is looking interesting at the moment, I will hold off on any fics till the fic more or less proves itself.

Please, one Dabihawks is on the really good line right now. It's just I need to see that one fic continue and more to see.

For gen fics, it’s even harder than ships since that has different expectations.

Very different based on canon or AU.

If nothing else, it just has to stick close or analogous to canon for it to work.

Canon rewrites and divergences have to be very good even if most of the time it won’t go that easily into my lists. I think this suffered more or just as AUs.

Sure there are fun gen fics but there’ll be a nagging feeling that this never fits the themes of the series it was based on.

Seriously, I have seen one fanfic that basically goes against the themes while never once considering that Horikoshi never excused the crimes and the blood in their hands; it’s a fun fic but so bad in its understanding of the series’ themes when a P5 crossover that fucking understand what the series was going for when the foils for Dabihawks aren’t there and the stupidity of putting ATLA in the Todofam and Hawks storyline which the canon story ain’t aiming for in that way, get that out of my face. Yeah, I’m not fucking letting that go when the fic should allow that story to be its own thing instead of taking too much from something radically different that has its own story. Yeah, there is no way the fic is going into my Bookmarks for that mistake. I don’t hate the fic but that section killed a good amount of my interest in the fic and destroyed whatever hopes it has to get in my Bookmarks. It’s not the first time a fic had done that but it’s still disappointing. It’s bad enough I've seen comparisons between Azula and Zuko to Touya and Shouto but they have different stories they are trying to tell and I just wish to see the ATLA Zuko comparisons stop at this point because it’s detracting from the story Horikoshi is trying to tell with the Todofam and Hawks. It’s a holdover of my frustration but the fic does not help at all with the general fanon stuff including taking Hawks’ mask at face value and Hawks’ BFF status with Mirko. For that status, there are requirements for that to work because they sure as hell aren’t BFFs much less friends in canon. I don’t mind seeing certain fics have that because sometimes it could be fun but in others, it meant Miruko have to know on some level what Hawks is doing to himself. That he can be selfish for once in his fucking life and that he can be his true self without killing his humanity and vulnerability for the mission he held for over 15 years. Like, that bit is important. If only Miruko’s potential was used in any way other than fighting, maiming, or a terrible fanservice combo. Any contemplation or parallels with Bakugou? No, okay…

I’m sorry about that. I don’t hate the former fic but hoo boy does it show a lack of understanding of the themes. I know that for that fic, canon is a suggestion but it still shows that for all the fun, it was still on the ‘good motive, still, murder/bullying’ when Horikoshi made it clear that he’s not excusing the blood based on the humanizing backstory. The point was to humanize the villains, to show them kindness and empathy from all the dehumanization they get from society so the heroes can take them in easily and escape the abuses of power consequences. That Bakugou is as much a victim as a perpetrator of the system. I mean it was never going into my Bookmarks but at least the other fic had a chance but blew it.

Sorry but it’s just so bad against what the series was trying to say.

Just thank Godoka it’s fanfiction albeit a popular one. Other popular fanfiction can counteract it by actually understanding the themes.

Anyways, I read porn with a stone face. Fluff I blush.

It’s not because fluff is bad; I have seen some post posits this when no, fluff makes me giggle and blush because it’s so cute.

It took me a while for me to not blush and eventually stone-faced. I can read the hottest smut and read the details of love that the couple shares.

NSFW fics aren’t everyone’s couple of tea. It took me some time to read explicit NSFW to be stone-faced.

While there are arguments for porn with a plot and porn without a plot, I prefer my smut self-contained in a single narrative. If you want any reaction from me, get feelings in there. I love porn in which characters are having emotions. It was not just the sexual gratification, the emotions of talking to their partner, and the small gestures of love that made the activity worthwhile. Sometimes, funny stuff too such as the crack taken seriously Battlesleep fic I love so much.

In the end, if I just want porn, I just look at porn. If I want porn with feelings that I have in actual porn, I have to search for the cream of the crop. It’s just hard to search for the latter when I don’t use porn that often, preferring fanfiction porn. At least that’s easily accessed as I know how to search for the best porn. I know my way around AO3 enough to know the best porn.

I saw porn that is just okay or just doesn’t hit the right kind of porn for me. There is porn that bores me on AO3.

It’s not that I hate porn for the sake of porn. If I want something titillating, I know where to look. Often fanart porn fills that purpose for me more than fanfiction.

Usually, I just want good fanfiction than something titillating.

Fluff is exactly that. It's all gooey and cute.

I prefer my fluff in a variety of ways: mixed with angst; unfiltered; after an angst fest…

Pure angst and violence aren’t my things. At least porn serves a purpose. Those just serve to hurt. Fictional angst and violence are great catharses as well as a good medium for that than actual violence. We can tell stories about violence and violence in general with all the exploration there is about it. The world is desensitized to it.

I just want those to be explored. Not that the kinks in those can’t be used to get off. Knowing someone has a rape kink but does not condone rape is better. Hey, no kink-shaming here. You do you.

I can technically read any kink if written well.

Though my squicks are very telling and I avoid those because it sounds disgusting and that won’t get me in the mood for the porn I wanted.

While I can read sex happily, I don’t read it that often. It’s not even my go-to. My go-to feel-good fics are Pokemon crossovers.

Crossovers are really difficult to pull off if the writer knows what they are doing. I’m following a Pokemon and One Piece crossover right now and it’s interesting considering Pokemon is inconsistent with power scaling throughout the franchise. I don’t like power scaling in fandoms but it has to happen. Another crossover I’m following is a Gundam and Star Wars fic.

I know when I see a good crossover. Bad crossovers are like rotten food in the fridge.

Garbage fics stink but crossovers are my love so it’s understandable why it stinks, even more, when it’s a bad one.

I’m not the biggest fan of self-inserts. This Bites is the exception but only because it was so original.

RPF isn’t for me either. It’s only fun if it’s fictional and that’s it. BJYX is the only exception though.

I’m really hard to impress, much more so when it comes to gen fics.

Perhaps it’s because my books are like that. Like fanfics, I need recommendations. That’s how it became my backlog of books.

Just I need good books over bad ones obviously. Colleen Hoover and JKR’s new book are horrible. I’m just disappointed in the latter, but since she showed her true colors, the writing has gone downhill to oblivion. Cursed Child was just a foreshadowing of the future downhill.

Believe me when I say this about BTS-written books and articles. With the help of ARMYs, I was able to parse which books to read. Even if I’m admittedly disappointed in one section of a book that featured a writer who didn’t give BE the listen or even a look at the lyrics and the translations the album deserves. Looking at you, Jeff Benjamin, with the wrath of a thousand gods. I mean K-pop western coverage was always wrong with the fluff and lack of research but music reviews are especially egregious. Not even Anthony Fantano and D’Angelo Wallace are exempt from this.

I just want good books. Is that too much to ask?

Just as I want good fanfics, I want good books.
