I am excited for the movie before this trailer came out. I'm not exactly squealing or anything but the movie before its release are already getting criticism for using the same design for females (my god, is that Rapunzel?!) and the cast in general. I'm a neutral party so I will only be commenting on the Disney character designs for women and not on race. I feel I don't know enough of the political topics and I want to get the full idea from both sides but I rather remain neutral.
This trailer feels gimmicky.
It didn't leave me with excitement or joy. While I do love Baymax for being such an adorable little robot and wonder more about this 'villain', the rest was disappointing.
I know trailers especially for animated movies do this all the time but that doesn't mean I wasn't expecting some darkness within the story itself or at least give a little more context on story. Perhaps I am getting the wrong idea for this movie or maybe not and the trailer is just doing a bad job showcasing it.
I hardly knew anything about the movie. Regardless I hope Disney make a more impressive trailer.
T.J. Miller is just... Wow. I see Tuffnut rather than Fredzilla. I have no problem him voicing in a Disney movie but can he at least change his voice? He has a very distinct voice and he didn't bother to change it. I know I haven't heard more of this character but I need to differentiate him from a character in a popular franchise.
Really, I want this movie to be as good as Wreck-it-Ralph. While I enjoyed Tangled and Frozen (the latter just pissed me off now whenever I see it and the former I do like but not as much as Wreck-it-Ralph), they're aren't exactly impressive. I found Brave to be just mediocre as well. Even though it certainly has its good parts like Frozen, the way it's told and presented falls flat similarly to Frozen but Brave can hold its own somewhat... Merida still remains the worst Disney Princess in my book while Elsa and Anna are so underdeveloped so really I don't care of these sisters. I have to know these characters to develop an opinion and I don't really know enough of these sisters.
I hoped all animated movies are seen as an innovative filmmaking technique that can tell any story and not just Disney. I hoped that this year where Pixar isn't releasing a movie with only Disney releasing one this year, animated movies are recognized. All of them. Awards or no awards, I want them to have the fame they deserved and fit the movie. That's all I ever wanted.
While I do understand bits and pieces of the language, I can tell you that you don't need to know the language to see that this is a great trailer.
For one, it treats the audience like the adults they should be. Considering this is Japan, I am not surprised.
Two, it gives us a peek into our main protagonist's past and personality (did you see Hiro's tears when he saw that video of his deceased brother?!) while giving us key points of its narrative.
It speaks to a wider demographic without belittling their intelligence.
...I'm not exactly squealing for any animated movie especially Disney. I want to see how Dreamworks would tackle Home especially its source material. I don't know for sure if it would even have the themes that the book explores. For now, it seems like a buddy comedy. Dreamworks had been adapting children's book of the late (How to Series by Cressida Cowell (both the book and the movie changed my life, okay?!), Guardians of Childhood (I didn't pick up the book series but I will make sure I will read it), and now The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex). The two books does have some material changed in them but the spirit and themes of these books remain the same.
I don't know about how the movie would tackle the book. I would withhold judgement until its release just as much as I would withhold judgement on Big Hero 6.
